"I will forge my own way, then, where I may not be accepted, but I will be myself. I will take what they called weakness and make it my strength." ~Rarity, "Black as Night"

T

The war between pegasi and earth ponies has raged for eight long years. Five years ago, the pegasi invented a powerful tactic which changed the course of warfare forever--they learned how to manipulate the weather. With the power of nature against them, the earth ponies seemed doomed to fail. That is, until a pegasus meteorology agent is captured on a routine mission. Rather than kill her, one earth pony captain comes up with a novel idea all his own--convert her into a double agent. Perhaps the war can yet be won.

This takes place several years before the foundation of Equestria.

“Wait! Eunuch Starbolt's method has given me an idea!”

Um. I hope that's a title.

What, should I have called him a gelding? :derpytongue2:

7464678 No, it's just the idea that to become one of the inner circle, you have to lose something near and dear.

"The good news, Starbolt, is that the rest of the circle has approved your application. The bad new is..." First Circle Commander Mincing Wind held up a pair of sharp shears in his magic. "Well, there's some minor qualifications you're going to need to meet. Bite down on this apple."

Oh! :twilightblush: No, that's totally backwards. I'm running this off the idea that eunuchs were somewhat common in classical societies. They weren't allowed to be the head rulers, of course, but they could be trusted with some things regular people couldn't. So Eunuch Starbolt became a eunuch earlier in life for some other reason and became a researcher later. Hope that explains it!

What!? That was it?:pinkiegasp:

You had me going from start to finish, mate. I can't wait to read more!

7464678 Actually, that would have been cool to see used.

I'm encountering an error trying to upvote this. Curious.

Man oh man, I'm enjoying this!

I really am interested in seeing where this story goes.

This chapter in particular was fun to read because of the tension. A prisoner. A head full of knowledge that could change the tide of war. A song.

How can it all end? I'm dying to know!

There some blunt foreshadowing and some awkward exposition, and the reveal in the prologue was described in a rather anemic way.

Despite these and other problems, though, this is interesting so far. I like the light touch that (most of) the worldbuilding uses: there's a lot of verisimilitude created by little details. It has that nice blend of (IRL) historical reference and fantastical elements.

Now that the introduction is over and the plot has arrived, I'm interested to see the ending.

Ouch! Fair enough. I haven't put nearly as much effort and thought into this fic as I should have. I have... sort of a vague idea of how I want the resolution to go; I just have to figure out how to make it into a story.
