Puzzle Piece

"Every one of us is one more piece in this puzzle called life. Now if only I could get a glance at the box to find my place...."

T

Terran Republic oppression. New Conglomerate rebellion. Vanu Sovereignty ambition. Deep divisions have formed between the once united factions on Auraxis, and with each passing day of ceaseless fighting, they grow deeper. Whether by the power of Vanu, the dictates of fate, or perhaps a less-than-harmless prank by a certain mischievous spirit, representatives of these groups meet in a most unlikely place. Cut off from the rest of their faction and everything that made the endless war so endless, these confused and cautious soldiers must survive each other and the new perspectives these ponies bring to their struggles.

Planetside 2 crossover. Rated Teen for violence, brief suggestiveness and strong language.

another round please, we will be here for the night.

i really this story, and since you have every class here. i wonder where the story will go after they decide to stop fighting.

6544141
I considered it obligatory to include every class. Figuring out which faction got each one was the hard part because the personalities had to play off of the class's role.

As for where the story goes later on, I might be guilty of wondering the same thing. :twilightsheepish: I've got a bad habit of jumping into an idea with only a vague sense of where I want it to end up. I'll have something in time to write it, but at the moment, I couldn't spoiler you if I tried.

6544931
What heresy is this? There's an even spread of classes! Everyone knows HA is practically the only class played in PS2!
:twilightsmile::trollestia::moustache:

6657368 Some of us break the mold. Besides, a bunch of big tough idiots shooting at each other isn't where I was going with this. Well, it's not the only place I was going with this....:derpytongue2:

“No. I was born on the carrier ship Redshift. I’ve lived my whole life either there or on the planet Auraxis. I’ve heard stories of Earth but I’ve never been there. None of my people have been there. Our ancestors left a long time ago.”

The lore of Planetside and Planetside 2 confirm that anyone within the nanite system on Auraxis (in the original Planetside, it's not just one planet, but a system of them. While in Planetside 2 it's just one planet* on which they hop around the continents. The devs have confirmed that Planetside 2 is a prequel of sorts, and takes place a few centuries before the events of the original Planetside) are essentially immortal.
All-out war broke out after the assassination of Commander Connery, which lead to an unknown (but VERY large) number of people to dive into the war effort for their respective faction. This means that thousands upon thousands of people became immortal once they stepped into the warpgate for the first time, and thus became tracked and stored in the rebirth technology system.
Once that happens, NOTHING can ~permanently~ kill you unless the system is shut down and then you die (which has only happened once to my knowledge).
The only way that happens is if the planetary (in Planetside 2, there are strongholds for each continent, and they are supposedly sealed subterranean structures, and only act for the continent, not the whole planet. This is to explain why the devs haven't programmed in a structure that the game doesn't need except for little blips of lore) stronghold system itself is disabled and then you die within the territory of it's rebirth domain (in the original Planetside, and while Planetary strongholds don't exist as a base or physical place that have been programmed into the game of Planetside 2, the devs did mention one in the short little 1-2 paragraph lore blip they released when they released the new continent "Hossin" on live back in late 2014/early 2015).

So there should still be a few thousand of the original settlers that came through the wormhole from Earth some 400-800 years prior running around alive and well.
(I imagine by now though, they're all either very important people, or didn't seek fame and fortune, instead choosing to dive into the war the whole time.)

*Between the events of PS and PS2, Auraxis may be stripped of Auraxium ~a material not found on other planets in Planetside, but necessary for the creation/function of Vanu nanite technology~ and then the planet destroyed. Of course, that part is speculation)

She walked over to the table that held the equipment they’d been found with. The pony followed and watched her closely as she handled each item. Her beamer was a husk, the slot for the energy cell reduced to a melted hole. She set it to one side and out of the way. Her Pulsar VS1 assault rifle was intact as well as Nathan’s Phantom VA23. She went through the rest of the items: Several grenades, two bricks of C-4, Nathan’s Beamer and motion spotter and two proximity mines, plus their two Force-Blades. None of them were damaged beyond some searing on the surface from the blast. It was lucky that nothing had been lost besides her Beamer, even if she preferred it to the much heavier assault rifle. She was checking how many spare battery packs there were when Nathan began to stir. She rushed to his side as he sat up.

Default gear and prox mines?
The only thing that's NOT default is the Phantom.
I really wish you'd have gone with some more "faction flavor" guns.

I'd be cool if your infil were packing an Eridani or Skorpios, I REALLY wish there was a Darkstar for the medic (because they're fairly easy to get for a directive weapon, and also, infinite ammo on an AR! ).
The NC HA should at least have a Gauss Saw (If not a GodSaw), and I really hope that the LA has a Fortuna or Tempest...
We already know what the TR MAX and Engie have (I really wish that the engie was packing a Lynx. I love that thing and it's crazy fire rate).

6658004

Some of us break the mold.

I'm with you there! I main medic myself (though recently I've taken to running infil to try to get a few scout rifles auraxed in hopes that they make the Battle Rifles actually decent weapons), and I don't particularly enjoy engie, but I'm working on tankmines all the same because I need a few hundred more kills on them til I get my ARX C-4.

I play Connery NC, what about you?

6659046
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Lore Dump Alert! Let me get my notebook. :twistnerd:
Everything I have in this story is based on my (very) limited knowledge of Planetside 2 lore that was presented to me during those little blips during the beta and the updates. I haven't dug around for the full story. I took liberties where I needed to fill in those holes created by my ignorance. As for the equipment, I haven't even played NC and I gave them some of the most spec'd out gear. I gave out gear based on what I needed each character to do with it. They have all of what they have for a reason. I play on Emerald and much less on Connery.

I hate to say it, but the more I think about it, RD would be imprisoned within a week for working for the TR.
(RD's more NC than TR. She's got a far too self-reliant, "lone wolf" style personality to just step in line without asking questions. Hell, even after Twilight's proven that what she knows is correct, Rainbow still questions it until Twi goes into lecture mode, and finally breaks it down into layman's terms.)

RD is loyal, but not a blind follower like military doctrine demands.
She's quick and intelligent, but she wouldn't fit in with the VS for LOTS of obvious reasons.

But she's loyal in a "friends who are closer to me than family" way, which is how the NC operate.
The members of the Conglomerate value freedom, so they allow their troops to do whatever they like however they like to get the job done within the resource restraints they're given. They'll sacrifice themselves for their friends (IE, "Hey you! Stick that sticky grenade to me when I tell you and I'll run around the corner!") and they will also allow each other to team kill one another without getting terribly upset about it. Mistakes happen, live and let live.

Quick to action and personal improvisation on a whim definitely fits Rainbow more than military indoctrination or a lust for knowledge.

Now, Pinkie on the other hand is EXACTLY the type to just say "Okie dokie lokie!" to any order given to her without a care in the world about anything as silly as details or ramifications.

Wait, so rarity just happens to have replacement material for body armor that (judging by how thin and damage resistant a cloaker's uniform is) is at least 4x stronger than the most cutting-edge shear-thickening fluid treated kevlar known to man?
Wut?

6660496
I admit, point blank, that I BS'd that part with replicating the material. I chalk it up to "Rarity is nearly a goddess of making outfits and she had a sample to reverse engineer." I was cringing the entire time I typed it. :facehoof:

And RD hasn't been introduced to the rigid military order of the TR at this point. She only knows mottos and the basic background, which, if you think about it, is how recruits get hooked. They go in all starry-eyed with visions of glory. And then, right when it's too late to back out, you meet your Drill Sergeant and the hammer falls. :pinkiecrazy:

“And with this baby,” Trevor said, setting up his Phoenix and testing the sights. “We’ll have them dead to rights before they even hear about it.”

This is me, and I can tell you right now, a Phoenix is NOT an effective AI weapon. :coolphoto:

The only three uses he'll get out of that are some decently high alpha damage against a max, the OHK it has against an engie turret, and as a scouting tool.
(That last one may prove exceptionally useful.)

6544931
Engie and MAX were a no-brainer.

~HA is tough, but limited by ammo and health (which is why medkits are so useful for them).
~LA is fast, but exceptionally limited in range, resources (you run out of ammo taking low powered pot-shots pretty quick at ranged targets), and you burn through both C-4 and medkits pretty fast.
~Infil plays best off any class that can sustain them (whether that be via raw firepower and ability to draw fire like an HA/MAX, infinite ammo/recon supplies from an engie, or rez/heal support from a medic).
~Medic goes with anything, but has to keep in mind that they have to have eyes in the back of their head when they rez, because the guy on the floor can't watch your back (that's also why they have exclusive access to AR's).

That said, I think it would be better to have an HA/infil team and an LA/medic team than the infil/medic dual support class team, and the HA/LA dual "lone wolf" class team.

He had forgotten that the magazine was still empty. He pulled the trigger on the under-barrel with the same result.

No way, man.
Anyone who's played long enough to get the Brawler knows you reload the instant you have a moment where bullets aren't flying at you.

(I very rarely use the underbarrel shotgun on my Brawler, except when I run out of normal ammo.)
It's just too clunky, and it effectively adds 2.5 seconds of reload to your down time every time you fire it. I wouldn't mind it so much, except the TR and VS get an extra 2 rounds per mag in place of it, but NC get an underbarrel that stacks on extra reload time if they want to have the same killing potential between reloading the actual weapon itself.
If the Brawler's UBSG reloaded passively when not in use, then it'd be fine, but as it is, it's more a detriment than a helpful tool compared to the other empire's equivalent weapons.

6660561
Heh, don't worry about it.
PS2's devs have used the "don't question it, NANITES IS HOW!" line enough that this oddly fits well with Planetside 2...

They've used the "Nanites!" BS so much, the (then) Creative director Matt Higby eventually ended up on a modified history channel "Aliens!" guy meme with Higby's face on it. I doubt it will ever stop being used in the PS2 community. :rainbowlaugh:

6663801
What you need to remember is, this isn't a player. This is a soldier caught up in the action. There's no such thing as passive reloading in real combat. While training might take over and shove another mag in at the soonest moment, it is entirely possible for anyone to be distracted and forget.

Plus, reloading would likely require a person (not player) to stop or at least slow down to get the new mag out, lined up and fit in. Trevor would have risked the MAX powering up before he reached it if he'd done that on the run. The end of the NC perspective was supposed to be the same instant the TR perspective has the Major step into his LoS, so there wasn't really more than a second of down time then either.

Sorry if those perspective switches aren't clear enough.

Pinkie is both.

Also, I need to play Planetside 2 again. Need to load up my TR MAX again.

This is getting intense... more please :pinkiehappy:

Jesus this is really intense now o-o. Love your style of writing by the way :P

6977291 I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying my work.
And what, may I ask, would you say you enjoy about it?

6977406 Just the characters, setting, intense scenes... pretty much everything :D

6978010 It's good to hear I'm doing something right. :derpytongue2:

OH THANK GOD!!! :pinkiesad2:
all of that stress was killing me!

Thats bring an interesting idea. I am an nc trooper, but in truth. the only reason i fight for the nc now. Its because of my outfit. thats where my true loyalty lies. if one day they decide to fight the nc. I will simply go with them.

7168756
Are you alright? Do I need to call in a Combat Medic?
:pinkiecrazy::raritywink:

7169750
True Loyalty is not about the banner that flies over the base. It's about the soldiers on your right and left who will defend it with you. "Loyalty until death! Strength in unity!" isn't just meaningful to the TR.
:raritystarry::pinkiehappy::yay::ajsmug::twilightsmile::rainbowdetermined2:

Loyalty, patience, mentorship, friendship, trust, teamwork, and more beyond those define a good community, Aside from all the dogma, that community is the fun in this game.

Truly, the only deviation from this attitude was this positively despicable Katie character. The other two had exchanged blow for blow, life for life. They had made mistakes and had felt their shame was worthy of an attempt at reconciling, quite appropriate overall.

Katie spouts the the mantra of the Vanu Soveriegnty as if she abides by it, but she takes the title of Disciple in infidelity and Vanity.
To expound:
She was always rooted in emotion. Note, she was seemingly unable to trust in the applicator, a product of human ingenuity as blessed by the technologies of Vanu, to do the task it was designed to do. Unable to keep calm on the battlefield, and notably unable to restrain herself from conjugal impulses. She was an undisciplined soldier.
Further still, she is indulgent! She takes the gifts of Vanu, irreverent in her reception of this generous faith, and she is unprepared to make the sacrifice expected in battle. The outsider may question, What Sacrifice? Is she not immortal in body?
To have one's spirit weakened by attrition is not less than death. In fact, it is worse. If she is unable to maintain her virtues in the face of perpetuity, instead seeking only to enjoy the luxuries of an ephemeral existence lacking consequences, then she is no Acolyte of Vanu. The title we assign is VAIN!
Oh, and she's a Team Killing Traitor.

-The Human (Mark 2)

7208951
I find your take on this to be intriguing. I would like to explore the subject with you but I’d like to take it to PM since it will involve a lot of meta and spoilers.

This seems like a good read.

Will continue to read.

7360370 It's good to hear that you think so. I look forward to your thoughts on it.

7360669 I don't comment often these days, but when I do, its to announce thoughts on certain things.

You can guarantee that it will mostly be positive.

Got around to reading more. It seems good. Had some questions... Such as how does Twilight know what humans are?

The rest you kinda answered in the story.
Sláinte mhaith!

7416972 It's implied that Equestria Girls happened. The portal in the Crystal Empire is mentioned later, but it's not central to the plot and isn't even relevant until much later. It was the easiest way to keep the plot from being bogged down in the usual first contact tropes that most HiE stories stumble through. I wanted to focus as much as I could on specific conflicts Auraxians bring to the table and less on the novelty of humans in Equestria.

Will the humans be doing the violence, the ponies, or both?

7434011 That is very strange.

7434226 It's safe to say that would be a spoiler and the best way to find out is to read on. But if you want the answer before you start reading, then here it is. The answer is Both but mostly humans .

7418258 this was amazing. I really hope there Wil be a sequel of these three human warriors fighting to save equestria.
And more snuggling of fluttershy

7462876 I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, I do have the bare bones of a sequel planned. But unfortunately, it's scheduled solidly behind two other large writing projects. If I hear more interest in a sequel, I might be able to move forward with it alongside the others.
But since you've said something, I'll make sure it stays on my radar. Until then, :rainbowdetermined2::scootangel:

“I’m suggesting we remove ourselves from the problem without getting involved! I’m a scientist, not an inquisitor!” Katie shouted.
The door burst open, framing a pair of red-garbed humans.
“Nobody will expect what we just ran into out there,” the leader announced.
Silence reigned for exactly three seconds while the Vanu and Terran troops each came to the realization of who they were seeing.

Must...Resist...Urge...To...Make...Monty...Python...Joke.

He pulled out a small figurine of a design Celestia was sure she’d never seen before. He held it for a moment before slipping it back into the rift in space he’d brought it out of. When it vanished, Celestia felt more than heard a surge of whispers in her mind, as if a hundred voices were speaking over each other. But when they faded away, she could only remember one word.

Vanu

Ah fuck. I know that that will turn out.
