I am a follower of the cannon that the Souls Protagonists suffer from the "Mute/Silent Hero Syndrome". So, yes, you could say the protagonist is mute.

Hmmm... Impressively vocal for a mute. Then again, the protagonist has to be due to proper armor safety. Because fuck getting knocked out easily, never mind a sword through the head.
