Thor had always been imposing to the ponies. He was taller than any of them, had huge, rippling muscles and could call down thunder and lightning with a word. Add on the fact that he was the most powerful divine being that any of them had ever been in the presence of and it would be understandable to be afraid of him. But as the god of thunder slowly walked towards Rose, with his eyes hidden underneath of the rim of his helmet, every being in the world truly feared him.
He made a motion with his hand and a moment later Mjolnir flew to him, where it was snatched out of the air with enough force to blow the ponies around him off of their hooves. Even Discord, in his weakened state, was launched from his feet and would have fallen flat on his back had Celestia not caught him. Slowly, with each step seeming to take an eternity, Thor approached the goddess of the zebras, who, despite not having many facial features, was terrified beyond what she thought possible.
"Thor-" Rose began, before a backhand from Thor ripped the goddess off of her hooves and sent her flying into the side of a building, where she was stopped by the brickwork and fell to the ground with a small cry of pain. She weakly pushed herself back up to her hooves, feeling pain blaze through her face from where Thor had struck her. "Thor, I know that you are angry..."
"Angry is not a strong enough word to describe the rage that I feel right now," Thor replied in a whisper, yet his whisper was still strong enough to make the planet beneath him quake in fear. "In fact, I am fairly certain that there is no word among mortals that can accurately describe how I feel right now. But I promise you, that the flames of Hel will not be anywhere as painful compared to what I will do to you."
"Thor..." Rose replied in a terrified whisper, but the expression on Thor's face told the zebra that the time for words was gone. In the moment Rose blinked Thor moved from across the street to in front of the goddess, driving a boot into her chest and pinning her to the ground. Rose let out a cry of pain before she used her power to stab at Thor's leg with her thorns, but aside from tearing the material that made up his pants the thorns didn't even phase Thor.
"I have slain many an evil in my day, but know that I take no pleasure in striking down other gods. But today," Thor began as he lifted Mjolnir over his head and took aim at Rose's head with a deadly precision. "I will take a great deal of pride in ridding the world from you. To Hel with thee!"
Rose covered her head with her hooves as Thor let out a thunderous roar as he hurled Mjolnir towards the goddess...only to glance at his right hand in surprise when he found that Mjolnir was no longer there. Slowly the god of thunder turned around to see where Mjolnir had gone, yet all he had to do was look to the princess of the sun to see who now held the hammer of Thor.
"Celestia. I will ask this only once. Return Mjolnir to me and do not interfere again," Thor said in a murderous tone as he extended his hand towards the princess of the sun, demanding that she return his hammer. "What is about to happen is not your concern."
"Actually Thor, I believe it does," Celestia replied in a strong voice, one that was devoid of fear. She gripped Mjolnir tight as she walked towards Thor, whose eyes narrowed with a flash of lightning rumbling overhead. "You may be our god, but this is still my nation. And I will not have you execute Rose, no matter how badly she deserves it, on my watch."
"Can this be true? Are thou seriously telling me that you wish for Thor to spare this monster?! A goddess that sough to wipe out your nation and destroy all that you hold dear? Have thou taken leave of your senses?!" Thor rumbled at Celestia, his rage causing the ponies around them to cower. Celestia held her ground despite Thor's rage, not giving an inch despite the ground beneath her wishing to back away from Thor's rage. "Rose is the most dangerous and terrifying being in this land and yet you are instructing me, the god of your nation, to spare her? Do not think that holding my hammer means that you can speak to me in such a manner, Celestia."
"Does having Mjolnir give me any right to speak to you this way? No. Does my statues and knowledge of my ponies allow me to speak to you like this? Allow me to answer your question with a question, Thor. You said that Rose is the most terrifying being in this land. Yet I look around and to my surprise, none of the ponies in this town are looking at her with fear. But then who are they looking at?"
Thor knew what Celestia was implying as he began to look around at all of the ponies in the town of Ponyville. Despite Rose having trapped them in her magic, destroyed their homes and hurt their leaders in front of them, Thor found that Celestia was right. Every pony in the town, including the recently awoken ambassadors, were all staring at Thor with terrified looks on their faces. Some were looking at Rose with hatred and disgust. But the fear...it was of Thor. Or rather, what he might do next.
"Why would they be afraid of me? I have done nothing to warrant this fear," Thor asked Celestia.
"Because it's not what you've done, it's what you could do," Discord answered as he limped over to the both of them, turning Celestia and Thor's head towards the god of chaos. "Thor, as terrifying and evil as Rose is, she's not the strongest god in this world right now. You are. And because of that, every eye is on you. We all look to you."
Thor glared at Discord, before glancing down at the wounds of the god that had yet to heal. One of Discord's arms fell off and began to roll away from him, but Discord was so busy standing before Thor that he never noticed. Or just didn't care. Thor couldn't tell with Discord.
"And you're wrong. You have done some very scary things. Things that this world will never able to forget. Like killing Toraxo. Like defeating Shalor. You've proven to everypony that you, bar none, are the strongest in this world. So the ponies, the dragons, definitely the changelings, are terrified of you. After you slayed Toraxo, the changelings land was filled with earthquakes and plagues. after you've crushed Shelor, the dragons are preparing to wage war with us. While your actions had the best of intentions, they've had disastrous consequences."
"But I have done-"
"No. You haven't hurt the citizens or mortals in anyway. All of the other gods have. You know what the difference is, what makes these ponies so afraid of you? What makes me so afraid of you?" Discord asked Thor. Thor narrowed his eyes in response, before he glanced around at all of the ponies, who still gazed at him with fear. He then cast his glance back towards Celestia and Discord, who had moved in-between Rose and him.
"Pray tell, oh wise god, why are the ponies of this land so afraid of Thor, despite having no reason to be so?" Thor asked Discord with a snarl, but this time it was Celestia who stepped forward.
"When Toraxo attacked us, you stopped him. You defeated Shelor. And now you've beaten Rose with little to no effort. If any of the other gods, as evil and strong as they are, try to hurt us you would stop them. But what if you wanted to hurt us?" Celestia asked Thor, who found that he could not find the words to answer. "Who would stop you, the god that can defeat other gods?"
"I would never-"
"But you might. And that alone is enough. That is why they...why we are so afraid of you, Thor. Yes, you have been nothing but a help and a friend since you have arrived here, but we're also terrified of what you one day might do," Discord added on, cutting of Thor before he could finish. "Because you are the only one that can stop you. And if you did not wish to stop, then all we could do is die. We'd fight, yes, but we'd lose. And the ponies know that. The whole world knows that."
"So what would they think if you strike down every foe that crossed you? And what would happen if they day came when they had to stand against you? Like we're doing now?" Celestia asked before she pointed Mjolnir towards Thor, who took a small step back as if he himself had been struck by the hammer. "Because I promise you, god of thunder, if you try to kill another god of this land...then I will face you. I promised Faust I would following her teachings. And that means saving as many as I can. Even if it's scum like her. And you said it yourself, if a day came when I wielded the hammer and you didn't to stop you. Well I'm holding it now."
"It's about showing the world what gods should be like, Thor," Discord said with a laugh as he summoned his arm back to his side, standing by Celestia while smirking up at Thor. "We have to show them that not all gods need to be feared. That we can not only be their gods, but their heroes. Isn't that right?"
Thor lowered his head for a long time, lost within his own thoughts. Celestia and Discord watched with concern as the minutes turned into an hour, during that time Celestia placed Mjolnir atop Rose so that she couldn't escape. Then Thor turned from the both of them and walked over to the mirror that Celestia had shattered, picking up the frame of it before muttering a few incantations. The spell caused the shards of glass to reattach themselves to the frame, fixing the mirror once more. He then rose and walked back over to the princess and the god, handing the mirror to them.
"If you wish to keep her alive, the you can trap her within this. This mirror, according to what I've learned while inside of it, is able to imprison and erase gods," Thor told the both of them in a heavy tone. "It will not erase her unless you wish for it to. The choice is yours. But today, in front of all of those watching, it must be your choice. You must be the ones to stop this threat. I cannot. Not anymore. You must be the ones they look to."
Discord took the mirror from Thor, a heavy look in his eyes before he nodded to the god of thunder. Thor extended his hand and returned Mjolnir to him, allowing Discord to walk up to Rose and point the mirror towards her.
"Oh don't be so dramatic, we're not going to erase you. Just going to imprison you for a thousand years or so until you learn your lesson," Discord promised her with a smirk before he used his godly power to activate the mirror. A blinding flash erupted from the mirror and with one last cry of rage Rose was sucked into the mirror. Discord flipped the mirror around the see the image of the goddess trapped within the glass, getting a tired smile out of him before he held the mirror high.
"And that, mares, gentlecolts and everypony else, is how you trap an immortal being without striking them down," Discord said to the crowd with a laugh. The crowd of ponies let out a thunderous cheer as they swarmed the princess and the god of chaos, all of them thanking the both of the with tears or relief in their eyes. Celestia smiled at the ponies and took their thanks in stride, yet Discord found himself rubbing the back of his head and avoiding eye contact with the masses.
"That was pretty cool of you back there, saving me from Rose's wrath," Celestia said to Discord when the crowd had died down a bit, getting Discord to look at Celestia with surprise. "I thought that you didn't like getting involved in the matters of other gods. Or our matters, for that matter."
"Yeah, well, I wasn't going to just stand by and let the entire nation of Equestria fall to Rose, was I? And I certainly wasn't going to let the only princess that can tolerate me be destroyed by her either. Who knows if your sister would let me stay in this land?" Discord replied with a laugh, but then a small smile crossed his face as he gazed at all of the ponies.
"But you did. You stepped in and fought with another goddess. One that had imprisoned Thor. You saved all of us," Celestia told Discord.
"Nah, all I did was get kicked around by her. If anypony here was impressive it was you, swinging around Thor's hammer and breaking the mirror that imprisoned him. You know that only those that are worthy can wield it, right?" Discord asked Celestia, who gave him a surprised look, one that told Discord she didn't know what he had told her.
"Still, you came when we needed you. You were there when we were all praying for help. Who knows, Discord? Maybe we'll make an actual god out of you yet," Celestia said with a laugh before she turned back to see the Ambassadors walking towards her, relief on their faces. But while they talked Discord thought about what Celestia had just said and then he thought back to his actions, knowing that the reason he had showed was because he had heard her prayer. And he had answered it.
'She's right. I did answer her prayer. I showed up when the ponies need me most. Just like Faust used to do...just like Thor,' Discord thought to himself as he glanced down at his hand, noticing that his wounds were starting to heal. 'Maybe...Thor was right. Maybe I can change. Maybe I can be the god that this nation has needed...maybe I can be the god I wish to be.'
"Thor..." Discord began as he turned around to speak with the god of thunder, yet Thor was gone.
Thor: "Smashy time!"
Celestia: "No smashy the jerkass!"
Rose: "plz no smashy..."
Celestia: "Shut up jerkass, the adults are talking!"
Thor: "Lemme smash!"
Celestia: "You're scaring the littles!"
Thor: "Oh. Well... crap."
and now thor goes home and cries, so sad:(
They pissed off Thor. What Thor should do is let the monsters run rampant in Equestria. Do not help until absolutely necessary. If the Dragons attack Equestria, let them. If monsters attack Equestria, let them. Interfere only in the last moment or when absolutely necessary. When he does interfere, he should kill every enemy with no mercy. Fuck what Celestia and Luna have to say.
If a criminal attacks my family and was about to kill them, I'm not gonna stop until I kill that son of a bitch.
When is Celestia going to learn that banishing your enemies only lets them come back later?
Capitalization error.
8242876
This.
Thor needs to give her a lesson that mercy and banishment only prolongs the problem.
If an enemy like lets say, Tirek attacks, Thor should let Tirek defeat the princesses. Then he should come in and kill Tirek regardless of what the Princesses have to say.
Wow, a wbole lot of hypocrisy here. In every situation Thor has been in his hands were forced. He killed Toraxo because he was killing a child. But let's ignore that. He fought shalor because, while he seems like a cool god, he started the fight. But now the dragons want to go to war. Rose was going to kill everyone but they're afriad of what Thor might do as if his word amounts to shit. I get that Thor is head strong, but this is ridiculous.
Rose is responsible for killing a lot of Gods including Faust.
What Celestia is doing is giving a serial killer mercy.
Nah bitch, Rose deserves the death penalty.
Thor should let Celestia bang her head hard and only come in after she learns her lesson.
And, Not reading ever again. Sorry- but you kinda ruined it, Should've let thor punish that B*$&@. Bye!
Yeah lets trap a god that killed a lot of other gods for a Thousand years after all, what could possibly go wrong? Its not like every single thing we trapped like that came back for revenge right? Right?
A thousand years later....
Fuck.
Its like all ponies are born with an idiot ball somewhere inside
Having mercy is nice, but some simply dont want to change
Some are beyond redemption
im never going to understand the whole 1000 year punishment would never work on me if i was a immortal and evil the exact moment i was free i would get revenge everytime no matter how many times someone would try to help me starting with who trapped me and i would be a asshole too villain would wait for the hero to go into dialog then kill them
After reading most of your stories and following then from start to finish this is the one interpretation of Equestria that is making me want off this ride. I'll stay for the next chapters but so far the attitude of every character except Thor is making me just not care for them in any way and just wish that Equestria just burns up so he can just carry on his merry way.
The ponies don't show any drive to really want to live anyways and every time Thor saves them they're like "we were gonna die for sure, but golly you were kinda mean to that murderous and manipulative god that was telling to everyone that killed our previous god. It's not like we were going to die before because we were lacking a god an nobody cared anyway, right?".
How is imprisoning the goddess of the zebra's better than killing her, in practical terms? I get that now the ponies can think "oh, well, if I ever try to murder everyone I'll just be imprisoned for the rest of my natural life instead of destroyed" but to the Zebra Nation their goddess is still gone and it's still the ponies fault.
Celestia and Dsicord's pep talk and ensuing actions may make the ponies feel better, but they have still likely made an enemy of the zebras, who will now have the concrete goal of retrieving roses mirror and releasing her. They have a much better cause to go to war with the ponies than the dragons do.
Worst of all, even if they can keep the zebra from freeing Rose, they've just kicked the villain can down the road again. It might've worked out with Luna and Discord, but I doubt Rose is going to decide Friendship is magic when she gets loose again. And Thor will certainly not be around in 1000 years to save everyone's collective bacon.
Do they really not understand that Thor is the good guy? This reminds me of Tarbtano's "The Bridge" when the ponies feared Godzilla simply because he displayed a great amount of power. Same issue here. They have no problems accepting their own heroes, but when they realize the universe is much bigger than they know, the ponies start alienating others. It seems for being the land of friendship, they can't help but reject others that are not of their kind. Seems Rose's words had some truth to them.
Should have had Thor drive his boot through her rib cage.
8242979
True, but Discord could become much more stronger down the line, and Celestia may very well ascend to godhood as well during all those years.
Still waiting for beta ray bill to show up...
8242859
That..... actually pretty much sums up the chapter.
[url]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5RtlpXsl8k
The ponies are grabbing that idiot ball and they ain't letting go. I have the same issue with Batman, who's my favorite super hero, and most super heroes in general. I can get the wanting to show mercy and prove you're the bigger person, but there are some people out there that are too dangerous/psychopathic and that just need to fucking die.
Hope something bad happens in Equestria and Celly, Discord and the other ponys wants him [Thor] again and Thor says something like you wanted to do it you're own way, now deal with it.
Mjolnir is answerable only to Thor, only he can command it and it will always return to him if he wills it.
8243078
Mjolnir answers to those that are worthy of the hammer. If you follow Thor's canon in comics, many others have been worthy of Mjolnir. When Thor becomes unworthy he is no longer Thor, just Odin's son and Prince of Asgard.
8243090 Thor is the true master of mjolnir as long as he is alive, no one but himself is able to wield the hammer and he is not unworthy of mjolnir in this story.
Man these comments, do people seriously not understand the concept of long term consequences. Thor is a god his choices affect the entire world but every choice he's made he only considered how it will affect him and those closest to him. As a god that is insanely irresponsible. The changeling didn't ask their god to do what he did and now they suffer because Thor gave no consideration of what will happen to them without their god. The dragons asked their god to attack Thor but Thor had no reason to accept that fight and many lives might be lost in a war in the future as a result.
You can't just kill someone because they wronged you because that would make you no better and you can't kill them because you believe they will wrong you again in the future because you can't know that. Killing someone in cold blood is never the answer. Keep in mind there is difference between killing someone in self-defense and killing an opponent who can no longer fight.
i have honestly no idea wtf you doing with this story it started out alright but now? not wasting my time with this again
Of course he's gone. At this point it's not even a matter of leaving out of spite. It's a question of why bother?
Kill someone who was killing a child? No one like.
Defend yourself against someone looking to kill you? No one like.
Try to kill someone who trapped you so you couldn't stop them from razing the land? No one like.
You shouldn't stop doing good deeds for not getting appreciation. But doing good deeds and then getting attacked and hated on? Fuck that noise. That's wasted effort.
A certain line from a movie that just came out comes to mind for Thor.
"They don't deserve you."
8243116
The problem is that these are gods, they can be assholes sure but their jobs are important. Lets say there was a god who literally kept the world from falling apart and he decides to kill your family and everyone you love just for fun. You would of course want to kill this god for what he did but if you do the world will literally fall apart due to his absence. He definitely needs to be punished but is killing him honestly the best option?
Did Thor have no choice but to kill the changeling god? Maybe its hard to say, if Thor had tried harder he might have found a way or he might not have it doesn't change the fact that once you show everyone you'll willing to cross that line they will always be afraid of when you will kill again.
He didn't need to fight the Dragon god, it was pointless fight and Thor had nothing to lose other than his pride.
Killing Rose would have solved nothing, it wouldn't undo what she already did and based on what happened to changelings her death might have only caused more problems. By imprisoning her they have stopped the current threat and now have time to think of a long term solution for any problems that might arise as a result of her being imprisoned.
8243116
Agreed. What a fucking disappointment. I cannot suspend my disbelief any longer, unless something crops up as a reason for all this hate on Thor that actually makes a lick of sense, for example a species wide mind control spell designed to make Thor leave of his own free will, I am done with this story. The level of sheer disrespect he's getting from everyone is just fucking ridiculous, he should have just left them to the crystal giants at this rate. Would have caused him less grief.
This is similar to what happened with Roy Mustang in Full Metal Alchemist. The difference is, Roy genuinely was letting himself get caught up in his rage. Thor's situation is much more justified with how Rose basically was about to commit several grave atrocities, and he was filled with divine wrath because of that. I love this story, still do as well, but unless these semi-unrealistic interactions lead to something that makes sense for those to happen, I'll be kinda put off. You've done great so far, just keep some consistency. Hopefully as don't sound as rude as I think I sound, but I'm just confused is all.
Oh and I am still waiting for any explanation as to why the Changeling nation went to shit after Toraxo died. There was never any mention of the Gods mere presence holding the land together so what the fuck happened? There's no way all those disasters could be such a regular occurrence that the moment Toraxo was gone they stopped getting fixed and from what I gathered he wasn't one to answer prayers and help mortals anyway.
8243004
Like you, and many others, i agree that the ponies are being dumb, but here is the thing, Equestria never had to deal with such conundrum, kill one and save millions or spare it and risk even more lives.
In this story Thor understands that dilemma but at the same time he struggled with his desire to prove that gods can trusted, since he is from another world, one where he had allies to help solve the situation.
Now on this third act, something will happen that makes the ponies realize, "yes Thor was indeed powerful, and despite questionable decisions he did all that for us, we might not agree but he protected us nonetheless", most likely cloack pony is gonna trap the remaining gods and everyone will realize that without them the world it self goes bonkers.
8243151 Pointless fight? Nothing to lose other than his pride?
Shelor when he came to confront Thor:
Yeah, nothing to lose other than pride. Because who needs life? Living is so overrated. And hey, this would mean Thor could get into Valhalla!
8243175
He didn't need to fight, he could have just ignored him and left. Had Sheldor pursued Thor relentlessly or even taken drastic action to force Thor to fight then Thor would have been justified in fighting him.
8243184
Thats one way of dealing with it, but Thor was raised by a warrior culture, running away from someone that is doing as he should would go against what he was taught and what he is preaching, if anything the Dragons are being butt hurt over losing to the ponies god.
And before you say there could have been better ways to solve the problem, both Thor and Shelor are still on edge about each other, the fact that they both fought and lived proves that Thor will not punish kill you for doing what he perceives as a noble cause.
I am kinda amazed that so many folks who are supposedly fans of ponies are missing the entire point to ponies, and why Thor is having problems.
There's a culture clash here. Thor is a warrior god. He comes from a race of warriors. His dad is the guy who created a paradise that's entirely themed around getting to fight for all of eternity. Battle is joyous for him. His first solution to a problem is never going to be "negotiate" because fighting is fun. He loves righteous warfare; it's in his blood, in the way he was raised.
Ponies are not like that. The solution ponies have always employed has been imprisonment, banishment, or forgiveness. They don't kill unless there is literally no other way. Sombra is the only MLP villain who ever died.
And the proof that that methodology works, in their world, is all throughout canon. Luna is once more Celestia's beloved sister and co-equal. Sunset Shimmer has saved her world from bad guys more than once, including aiding the alternate version of Twilight Sparkle to give up being a mad scientist destroying the world for knowledge. Starlight Glimmer is Twilight's apprentice. Discord saved the goddamn day in the last chapter. If not for Discord, both Celestia and Thor would be dead. (And if not for Celestia, Discord and Thor would be dead, and if not for Thor, Celestia and Discord would be dead... but Discord's the only one of these three who was a villain who was imprisoned for a thousand years, and then shown mercy.)
Toraxo was a bag of dicks and I won't cry for him, but he pushed Thor as far as he did because Thor wouldn't negotiate and play nice and try to integrate with the other gods; he basically just showed up, said My way or the highway, bitches, and Toraxo got deeply offended. At the point where a worshipper's life was on the line, Thor was forced to kill Toraxo, but if Thor had been a true god of Equestria and not a dude from another culture who just showed up and got himself voted God because he did so much cool shit, it wouldn't have happened, because a true god of Equestria wouldn't have pushed the other gods that far in the first place. Then Thor didn't step up to take over Toraxo's job and protect the changelings, who are now suffering because the shit their god used to do for them isn't getting done.
Thor tried to talk Shelor out of attacking, but he was terrible at it because damn he loves a good fight, and his pride wouldn't let him back down. So now he's humiliated the dragons and they want revenge, and Thor might be all "bring it" but what's Thor going to do, kill all the dragons? The ponies would be horrified at that thought. But how does he make peace if he doesn't kill all the dragons? Dragons aren't known for backing down, either.
Basically, Thor waltzed into a situation where there are politicians smiling at each other's faces over tea and politically backstabbing each other behind the scenes, very civilized, lots of saving of face, and he started swinging a hammer around and breaking heads. No one would appreciate someone doing that to Congress no matter how much they hate their reps, and American humans come from a tradition where political revolution actually happens. Gods, in Equestria's world, don't die... turns out Faust did, but no one knew that for sure except Rose. Thor's killing gods or beating them within an inch of their lives because he does not fit into the culture, and he never did, and he never will, because he's a warrior god and ponies are not warriors. And the thing is, accepting the idea that murdering your enemies is a good idea might be necessary to survive sometimes, but the rest of the time, it makes your culture more dangerous, violent and paranoid. Ponies don't lock their doors; their foals go all over the place with no concept of stranger danger; they are more innocent and friendly and happy than human beings are because they don't fear their fellow ponies nearly as much as we fear other humans, because they don't have to. They live in a world where murder almost never happens. And you're asking them to accept a guy who murders gods, just because his heart is in the right place?
The only real resolution to this would be for Celestia to step up and ascend so that Thor can go home. Discord might be becoming more responsible, but the god of chaos is never, ever, ever going to be a good choice for the god of Equestria; he might be a little more diplomatic than Thor but that's not saying much. Celestia's the only one who can replace Faust as a true god of Equestria. Thor... is just not a good fit. He's a guy who thinks that bathing in the blood of the evil is a great way to spend a Saturday night, whereas ponies believe that killing is never a good idea and will resort to it only when it is the lesser of two evils. Toraxo was probably looking for Thor to beg, and might have relented then; Thor is too proud to beg. Celestia wouldn't have been.
It's not that Thor is not a great hero or that he doesn't genuinely want to help or that he hasn't saved the ponies' bacon from shit a god needed to handle. It's that he's culturally a terrible fit for ponies.
8242940
i think equestria needs an dose off rangnarök
8243184 I'm done. Wasted effort on a pointless argument. Anyone else is free to give it a go.
8243192
That just explains why it happened not why it was a good idea.
8243199
Yes thank you, finally someone who gets it and can explain it better then I can.
8243199
Yeah, sure. Politians that push, and push, and PUSH until they die, because they are to STUPID to see that there is something stronger than them. And ponies are no better, if Thor didn't step up and said:
"Hey, you want to kill ponies and cause strife? You go trough me." They would still be dealing with titans, with unknown results.
The moral of this story: All gods, even the good ones, are pretty much giant douchebags.
Thor's trying to help people, but he's being as subtle as a nuclear bomb. We're yelling at the ponies for being afraid of him, but can anyone HONESTLY, in their heart of hearts, say that they wouldn't be afraid at a display of raw, unadulterated power from a being so powerful that no force on Earth could stop it?
(I wanted to be Pro-Registration so badly during the first Marvel Civil War, but the whole event was just written so stupidly...)
Plus, from what Rose and the other members of the Douche Pantheon have said, ponies have been without a god for quite some time. They're not used to such power on display.
Discord... well, he speaks for himself. Although he is getting better.
Kill a god, who would curse an innocent foal to death, as a last resort => Get shit upon.
Beat down a god who refused to back down from a pointless battle => Get shit upon.
Get trapped inside magic mirror, almost dying in the process, and proceed to deliver justice upon a god about to commit literal xenocide => Get shit upon.
And Thor spoke in hushed words, "Guess I'm not needed, then." He promptly offered peace among worlds, spun his hammer, and effed off.
8243184
Incorrect.
It was made abundantly clear that Thor would have to fight.
The fact that Celestia refused to even comprehend that Shelor couldn't have been talked down shows exactly why she is not ready to be a god.
8243102
Who said she was no longer able to fight? Being outmatched is not being unable to fight.
8243199
The Toraxo summary sounds somewhat like victim blaming. Toraxo put the curse on the filly because the FILLY stood up to him. This irked him, so he cursed her to a painful death. There is no redemption for that transgression on the life of an innocent, death is the only true recourse.
No, Shelor would never have backed down. From what I understand, Shelor was a god of honor. He was fervently prayed to by his people, and would not in any way leave that unanswered.
Rose deserved no forgiveness, but imprisonment is pointless. She is a schemer, her alignment will not change with imprisonment, and most likely she will return with a plan that will subsequently cause even more problems for Equestria than she already has.
All in all, I do understand why Discord and Celestia went this direction. This is the will of their people, their subjects. That is all a god can do on this world, to live at the behest of those that worship them.
This lends itself to the biggest problem that every parent faces. Do I give the child what they want, or what they need?
The ponies need to see that there are dire consequences for dire actions, you know like planned murder. They may not want to see this, but it is what they need.
Okay then seems that people are going on and on about culture clashes.
Fair enough there is indeed that going on. But lets go at this from a logical standpoint.
Rose is a goddess who has it in her head that she is allowed to kill off other gods WAY before Thor showed up, and who could have been using that to force the other gods to play by her rules. Or maybe not, until we find out exactly why she went after Faust beyond a simple hatred of ponies I can't say. Maybe Faust wasn't willing to play ball with Rose when the Zebra tried to set things up to her liking. Or maybe she just got in the way of Rose making the ponies lives miserable.
Either way this is who Rose is, a goddess killing divine with slightly nazi like mannerisms. If one just replace Jews with Ponies, since it pretty clear she was quite content with going genocidal on the colorful equines.
Now then punishments: Lock her away or Put her down.
Lock her away
Pros: Merciful, less frightening, better harmonizes with the ponies' culture, and less chance of some horrible backlash that might result from an divine's death.
Cons: Can induce madness or increasing level of rage due to Sensory deprivation and extended solitude. Divine beings are immune to the effects of time, thus will not simply pass away of old age meaning that while trapping them is annoying. All it does is just aggravate them it doesn't really punish, they don't lose anything as they have all the time in the world. Does nothing to handle the root of the problem, as that requires therapy and work not locking person away and throwing away the key. Lastly, when released or when freed on her own there is high chance she will simply pick up where she left off. Invites others to try and get the mirror, either to free her or to experiment on a trapped goddess to steal power from. Lastly...goddess is not able to do her job even if she is not dead.
Put her down
Pros: Eliminates the problem. Free's up a divine slot that MAY be filled in at a later date if possible with someone better suited.
Cons: Violent, clashes with ponies' culture, could have rather dangerous consequences if Rose's death causes a chain reaction, and causes others to get upset over the choice.
All in all though I would put her down. Not only because she deserves it, but because at the moment the ponies are not doing anything to make that NOT the only viable action. Unless they plan to keep stuffing her into a mirror until the end of time and pray that by some chance it never gets damaged enough she breaks free and goes on a rampage.

Well said! I think that both Celestia and Discord will become gods. They would balance each other out and would provide what this world needs. They would be two gods that would be able to help the world not use it as their personal chess pieces.

Well said. I'm sure there are many others who I would want to say the same to but I don't want to clog up the top comments with nothing but links to other peoples well reasoned answers..... and I'm too lazy to scroll down and click all those reply buttons....

AH'hem, who ever said everyone one this site was a fan of the ponies? I for one don't watch the show anymore and mainly enjoy pony bashing fics, or at least "dark" fics that actually have a bit of a grasp on how things should have gone in Equestria if anything made a lick of sense for even a second.
Coming back at the comment section I see people talking about culture, long term consequences and stuff like that.
Well, here's the thing: Rose had it coming and then Celestia and Discord decided they were wiser than a god with much more experience and knowledge on how to deal with deities. No one forced Rose or Thoraxo or whatrever god to do what they did, and they had to pay the consequences... but it seems that only Thor must pay the price of the foolishness of everyone around in the planet because... he is powerful and everyone fears and hates him? Well gee... I mean, its not like some ponies could... I don't now... crash a moon or a star upon the planet if they went bonkers, right? Or even ponies who apparently managed to break space-time for fun and profit. Boy, I sure wonder if that's in canon...
That's not counting how everyone at the end of this chapter were patting themselves on the back because one of them finally grew a bit of a spine and decided that rolling over and die wasn't as fun as it looked, completely overlooking what Rose was going to do and trying to get the moral high ground against Thor. Also sure, bloody brilliant idea with the imprisonment thing. It's not like it didn't bite them in the rear before, right?

Yeah Celestia and Discord are capable of just as much destruction and death as Thor is. The difference is Thor has no problem showing that he is willing to go that far at a moments notice. Being afraid of the guy who can kill a god with ease and that no one can stop him from doing it is a perfectly rational response.
A lot of people here seem to think that Thor should be allowed to do whatever he wants because he knows best. Do people seriously not understand what is wrong with that?

It's not what Celestia and Discord are doing here, though? Doing what they think its best? And I can't say for others but I don't think Thor needs to have a free pass, its just a matter of action and consequence. Plus, who cares for the other nations and gods anyways? They've shown clear disdain towards ponies and just wish them all cleansed from the planet as far as the story has shown us. So far they're just as genocidal as Rose, or just wish the ponies to suffer and its hard to say which one is worse. So far Equestria had the worst hand while the others were rigging the deck. This is just getting even.
Besides Celestia has shown in the past that she's capable of basically go against her own family to save Equestria and has also shown that she will fight for her ponies as seen at Cadence's wedding. So far its just "Thor bashing" because he's new and powerful and doesn't fit in "muh schemes" for the native gods. Also the ponies MUST worry about everyone when the rest of the world wanted them gone long before Thor became Equestria's god? I think it would be pretty justified to be at least uncaring about their woes the same way they were ignoring Equestria's pleas for help when the titans attacked. Many people see this and that's why they're reacting negatively to this attitude towards Thor, who is just doing the best with what he has and he's just getting insulted and disrespected for doing a good job.
I said it before, and I'll say it again. Ponies are stupid.
