is a Navy officer's rate. The equivalent Army/Air Force rank is Major, though it was stated in one if the comics that Spitfire's formal title and rank is Captain. The more you know.
5161267 just because I feel the need to further clarify... Spitfire may be the rank of Lt Commander. In the navy Captain is the highest officers rate that can be achived aside for admiral status. In the navy a Lt Commander of Commander, is in command of small and medium vessels or submarines. Although they do not hold the rate of captain, because they command the vessel, they are to be addressed as captain. Which makes spitefire's rate and title logical. She is a Lt Commander that is in command of a flight team, therefore by being the acting commander she is called captain. But... Then I realized they said royal equestrian airforce and not navy... That's an error...
5522705 its also important to not confuse "title (rank/rate)" with "address (position)". In the Navy, the ACO (Acting Commanding Officer, of say, a destroyer, may hold the rate of Commander, but will be personally addressed as Captain and impersonally addressed as the ACO. In the Army, the soldier at the head of a platoon may rank Private, but is still addressed as the Platoon Sergeant, a position commonly associated with the rank of SFC. That's not even considering the difference between the address and Title of Rank (which is different from the Title). Once you're a Sergeant, that's great, but it doesn't matter if you're a Sergeant E5, Staff Sergeant E6, Sergeant First Class E7, or Master Sergeant E8, when someone is talking to you, you're just Sergeant.
In the army, it goes like this: My platoon Sergeant is Sergeant First Class Swift. When I'm speaking about him, he's Sergeant First Class Swift. When I'm talking to him, he's Sergeant Swift. When I'm talking to him in formation, he's Platoon Sergeant Swift.
If the ACO of the vessel is, say, CMDR. Bowdin, when I talk to him, he can he Commander or Captain. When I call his attention, it's Captain on deck! When I'm talking about him with my crew members, he's Captain Bowdin, but in official correspondence with the brass, he's Acting Commanding Officer Commander Bowdin.
I know it can he confusing. It took me a few years, too. But, we need to be the most complicated and unnecceaary, otherwise we wouldn't be America!
