I have a theory about the gravel pits.

I think that it isn't just gravel.

I think that it's a byproduct of a powerful, undiscovered energy source, like Australium.

Deep down in the earth, This energy turned all of the fertile land into inert rocks, like how lightning will turn sand into glass.

How do I know this?

I don't.

But it makes for a good story, and it also means that the Mann Brothers were lucky idiots. Dead, stupid idiots, but lucky all the same.
