On the day, Fluttershy, Applejack and Pinkie Pie were going to confess their love for Rainbow Dash. Rainbow volunteered to test a new spell for Twilight. That spell splits rainbow into 6 clones that represent a basic emotion. Both mane and tail matching the color.
Green: Happy
Blue: Sad
Red: Angry
Yellow: Scared
Pink: Tender
Orange: Excited

This kind of reminds me of the episode of Teen Titans where Beast Boy and Cyborg go into Raven's mind, discovering all of her clones which each represented a type of emotion.
