FAERIES

a cryptic group, the Faeries were more common before Luna's banishment, when they began dying out for some reason.

the Faeries were a race of giant, sapient lepidopterans (butterflies) found across the world. while capable of low-level hypnosis, they were the main prey of the centaurs before they began vanishing. they were divided into two classes: Air Faeries and Ground Faeries. However, these were further divided into other classes. Among the Air Faeries were the High Faeries and Spooks, and among the Ground Faeries were the Cave and Sea Faeries.

though believed to be extinct, the odd sighting now and then could mean some still exist.

Common Faery

the Common Faery was a basic air faery found in Bumbleland. it was fairly standard, slightly taller than a normal pony, with six limbs, two of which were useless, and was passive by nature.

Fireball Faery

among the most aggressive faery species, the Fireball Faery was native to Khaan's deserts, and was capable of weak fire-based magic.

Mist Faery

an air Faery native to Stirropean bogs, this faery was often known for pranking travelers, but also for helping lead them through treacherous swamps

Greenwood Faery

the Greenwood Faery was native to the Everfree forest of the continent of Equus. sightings of this faery subspecies still occasionally pop up regularly.

Pixie

half the size of other air faeries, these surly insects scared other beings in order to keep them away and be left alone

Sprite

Only two feet tall, the sprites were playful natives of Zebrica's grasslands.

Sylph

only a foot tall, these Faeries were the smallest of their kind. they lived in swarms in secluded mountain valleys throughout the world, and were said to be beautiful singers, even by fairy standards.

White Faery

a type of High Faery, the White Faeries were mysterious beings only found in tall mountain ranges.

Death's Head Faery

Considered an omen of ill fortune, the Death's Head Faery was very rare, and avoided by most.

Mannegeshi

a Horror spoken of as a trickster spirit by the buffalo, the Mannegeshi are more terrestrial than most other air faeries. These insects were said to live between rocks in the rapids. One of their biggest delights -- a completely non-heroic form of trickster behavior -- was to crawl out of the rocks and capsize the canoes of deer and equines canoeing through the rapids, spinning them to their death. in modern times, (supposed) relict populations are blamed for crop circles

Spade-Headed Forest Horror

nearly always hovering, the spade-head gains its name from the petal-like growth that rises over its head. its hind legs are nearly invisible against its large abdomen. supposed encounters tend to include the victim feeling extreme nausea, as well as throat irritation.

Leprechaun

only about three feet tall and native to Glascolt/Coltland, Leprechauns were said to be expert shoemakers, as well as having a pot of gold. the second was never verified, though they were reported to make bowl-like nests, and their eggs were said to be a soft yellow.

Clauricorn

another Glascolt/Coltland native, Clauricorns (clurichauns) were close relatives of the leprechauns. these ground faeries were jovial, good-natured, and fond of alcohol. If you treated them well they were said to protect your wine cellar, and if mistreated, they would wreak havoc on your home and spoil your wine stock.

Far Dahrig

another leprechaun relative, the Far Dahrig (far darrig, fear dearg) were a race of ground faeries which were known to be incredibly violent and mischievous.

Brownie

two feet tall and native to Glascolt/Coltland and Trottingham, Brownies were helpful, cleaning up houses in exchange for nothing more than a bit of food. unfortunately, their presence often caused centaurs to burst into houses looking for the short, slow faeries.

Boggart

a close relative of the brownie, while Brownies were helpful, boggarts were malicious, playing pranks, spilling milk, and tracking mud throughout the home.

Kobold

Native to Germaney, Kobolds (or goblins) were subterranean faeries, living in giant underground cities, and setting deadly traps to keep outsiders away.

They were blamed for the accidents, cave-ins, and rock slides that plagued miners. One favored kobold prank was to fool miners into taking worthless ore. For example, miners sometimes encountered what looked to be rich veins of copper or silver, but which, when smelted, proved to be little more than a pollutant and could even be poisonous. These ores caused a burning sensation to those who handled them. Miners tried to appease the kobolds with offerings of gold and silver and by insisting that fellow miners treat them respectfully. Nevertheless, some stories claim that kobolds only returned such kindness with more poisonous ores.

Hob

Often confused with Kobolds, these cave faeries enjoy pranks, but never dangerous ones.

Knocker

the Knocker (Knacker, Bwca, Bucca, or Tommyknocker) is a species of cave faery found across the world. Their name comes from the knocking on the mine walls that happens just before cave-ins, warning the miners that a life-threatening collapse was imminent.

Naiad

Naiads were once common in the rivers of Mare-a-thon, and were the only freshwater sea Faery species

Ningyo

Ningyo were Neighponese sea faeries, said to be good luck. However, actually catching a ningyo was believed to bring storms and misfortune, so fishers who caught these faeries were said to throw them back into the sea.

Umi-Bozu

the largest species of faery, at 18 feet long, the umi-bozu were said to only appear during storms and capsize the ship of anyone who dares speak to them. According to one story, if angered, they ask that the crews provide a barrel that it proceeds to fill with sea water to drown them. To avoid this disastrous fate, it is necessary to give them a bottomless barrel.

CENTAURS

not to be confused with the Sagittarius, a type of primate (of which Tirek was one), the Centaurs were close relatives of the Thri-Kreen. these mantids were once found across the world. Not much is known of the centaurs' behavior or culture, but they supposedly lived in tribal societies far away from any other civilization. They were said to hunt in large groups, roaming in search of their preferred prey, the Faeries.
