In MMOs, networking can be a vital part of the experience, which is why we often discuss the role of community in building a healthy game. A good community is built around mutual respect and a sense of belonging. Players from different backgrounds and with various levels of expertise interact in both in-game and out-of-game activities, such as parties and raids. During these activities, we can share ideas and experiences, which in turn helps create a sense of warmth and rootedness.

While this kind of sociability is important, it can also be time-consuming and work-like. During guild events, some guilds still maintain a militaristic culture. In addition, the complexity of collaborative gameplay tends to break down the neutral ground of MMOs. However, many players are willing to accept this loss of sociability to ensure the success of their community. MMOs foster a different kind of social connection than they would in real life.

MMOs provide spaces for relationships that are beyond the confines of work and home

As such, they can function as a new "third place" for informal sociability. In this regard, it seems that MMO participation can be highly conducive to the formation of bridging social capital. Bridging social capital is not always emotional support, but it can open up an individual to a variety of worldviews and enables him/her to make connections that would otherwise not be possible.

Asheron's Call II, For Honor, and other MMOs are prime examples of a game with a socially-active community. Players plug into persistent virtual worlds that are loosely structured by open-ended narratives. The players build status relationships and worry about crime. These are important elements of an MMO community, and without them, it would be impossible to grow a strong one.

While it is important to have a great social environment for an MMO, it is crucial to pay close attention to how players interact with each other. The social environment in an MMO can have a big impact on how well the game is perceived by the players. It is important to remember that designers tend to include free chat in their games without considering how it will benefit their players. They often copy the chat systems of previous games, but the goal is to create a more human-like environment.
