I'm not actually a big fan of MLP, but the universe contains many interesting implications for people like me, i.e. people who take a sugary world and attempt to make real life apply. I'm told I write the characters well for someone who isn't a big fan, and I have a passing knowledge of the major events in the show. My stories will tend to be dark, but not trollishly so. I pride myself on having even the darkest pieces of my work having meaning and legitimacy. I primarily write for Buffy, Exalted, and Warhammer40k, so...honestly, I'm kind of surprised at how fun writing MLP is.
