It's definitely unique. In G4 we saw very few (if any) ponies with tight curl/cornrow manes, perhaps because animating it in flat colored 2D would be a nightmare. In 2D, Misty's mane is drawn like Pinkie Pie's.

I get where you're coming from, and I guess it really just boils down to personal preferences so we'd have to agree to disagree
I keep getting "Tilly from Star Trek: Discovery" (AKA not-trek) vibes when I see that mane-style and it will never not rub me the wrong way.
I don't know what it is about the style or why I don't like it as much as I do, but it is what it is.
