The Future of "Make Your Mark": Thoughts and Speculation · 8:32pm Sep 16th, 2022

Hi everyone,

So… we’ve gotten quite a lot of info regarding the upcoming episodes of Make Your Mark over the past few weeks. I figured I’d offer my thoughts and speculation. While I am optimistic, there are a few things that concern me about what direction they’re taking the show.

So, without further ado, let’s unpack what we know so far.

-VILLAIN’S IDENTITY-

So, we were in the dark about the villainous alicorn for many months, and only recently did we learn that her name is Queen Opaline. It seems she’s been waiting for the right moment, for magic to return, to enact her plan for revenge. Only… revenge for what? I understand her motives might be elaborated on when the heroes finally confront her, or perhaps they just make her “evil for the sake of it.” I hope it doesn’t come to that cheap formula, though.

Opaline also appears to have a castle as her lair. I wonder if it’ll be like a dungeon Sunny and her friends must endure to confront the evil alicorn, or if she will leave and attack Equestria of her own accord? Also… where did Opaline come from? Was she originally another race, or is she a pureblood alicorn? But she’s not the only one shrouded in mystery, as she just so happens to have a supposed accomplice.

We can see Opaline is accompanied by a unicorn mare, whose name is apparently Misty. From teaser material, it appears she will meet and interact with the Mane Five. And what are her motives? Is she aware of Opaline’s malevolent motives, or is she just blindly following without understanding? If it’s the former, is she following out of her own self-interest, or fear of her master?

Also, she is seen without her horn in certain screencaps, hinting that she is actually an earth pony. Could it just be a disguise, or it is perhaps a conduit that an earth pony can use to channel magic? This ties to one of my earlier theories about a special plant that could be fashioned into an artificial horn for earth ponies to use unicorn-style magic. This would be interesting to see.

I feel that Misty is the type of character who will get a redemption arc, much like Trixie and Starlight Glimmer in G4. Maybe her time spent with Sunny and the others will help her bond with them, making her hesitant to keep going with Opaline’s plan, and her heel-face turn is ultimately what saves the day? I could just be grasping at straws, though.

So, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what the villains will do in future episodes when they are released!

-CUTIE MARK DILEMMA-

So, now we know that the baby dragon has been named Sparky Sparkeroni… a name I personally am not fond of. I would’ve been happier with recycling “Spike,” but what can you do? And he apparently has some very powerful magic, as was speculated in the pilot special. Even more curious, he causes a mishap that swaps Sunny and Hitch’s cutie marks. So… what could this mean for the two childhood friends?

I have a hunch, and it may sound outlandish, but could ultimately come to fruition. I get the feeling that Hitch, through Sunny’s cutie mark and going through what she did, may gain the ethereal horns and wings, and become the first official male “alicorn.” I know this may be some wishful thinking, but I think it could be a good thing to bring alicorn stallions to the official canon.

And… how will they get their cutie marks switched back? Will Sparky gain control over his magic and do it, or will Sunny and Hitch figure out a way with their own magic? It’ll be interesting to see when the episodes are released.

-EARTH PONY MAGIC-

It appears there are some mishaps that happen with earth pony magic, as hinted in the teaser material. While the Mane Five are covered in some red sticky stuff, some foals appear tangled in plant tendrils, though they don’t appear distressed. But it makes me wonder… could earth pony magic be a bit unstable?

So, I’m assuming that, since they haven’t had as much to practice with it as unicorn and pegasi, they are still getting used to it. However, and I think this is more plausible, because earth pony has been dormant for millennia, is needs to “decompress,” before stabilizing to normal levels.

And as I mentioned before, I’m curious about what the extent of earth pony magic could be, and how else it could be used.

-TWILIGHT IS “WITH [THEM]?”-

So… they brought back Twilight? Whaaa…? :unsuresweetie: So, I have sort of mixed feeling about this. It has been confirmed that this Twilight is not voiced by Tara Strong, which has of course disappointed some people. But, I think it’s clear that it’s not the same Twilight. For one thing, Twilight had a completely different physique in the final episode of FiM, more akin to Celestia and Luna, while in the MYM trailer, she was more akin to her original physique.

But adding to that, this could tie to one of my speculations earlier of FiM being historical fiction in G5’s Equestria. Twilight and the others may have existed, but not in the way we know. And I also have another theory, with her appearing from the three crystals: the crystals may project a figure in the form of a being that someone greatly admires, whether they exist or not, to give them guidance. Sort of like an imaginary friend, but magic in nature and more of a guide than anything.

It’s also possible that these projections of Twilight could be pre-recorded memories within the crystals, intended to give advice to anypony who finds them in the future. Of course, we have no way to know for sure, until the episodes air.

How I feel… this seems like a mixed bag. While nice to pay tribute to previous generations, they shouldn’t do so in a way that draws too much of the focus. I feel like, if Twilight came back and got too involved, she could end up stealing the show away from the new cast. Since they have made the precarious decision to bring a G4 main character into G5, they’d better know what they are doing, and try to keep her mostly in the background.

G5 needs to be its own thing, with its own identity.

-CONCLUSION-

So… quite a lot they’re bringing into G5. But that also means so much more can go wrong if the writers aren’t careful. I know a lot of people are shitting on G5, claiming it’s worse than G4, but c’mon people, it’s only just started! And G4 didn’t pick up in the first season, either. So, we need to at least give it a chance. I won’t hold my breath for anything, but I am willing to watch the first episodes that come out to dip my toes before taking the plunge.

Let’s hope it can all work out! Fingers hooves crossed!
