Memorial Day is doubly tragic in the wake of so many unjust wars. But of all the veterans I've ever known, only one was a crappy person, because "support the soldier, not the war" took root in the national psychology. That root flowered into a civilian support network for veterans that (seemingly) outdoes the V.A. in nearly every regard.
One of my high school classmates was deployed to Yemen and blown up by civilian freedom fighters labelled as "terrorists" for the crime of protecting their starving land against us. It didn't break my friend, but it cost him his arm and more. Makes me sad. But this blog is a reminder to be cognizant on the date tomorrow, and to use the opportunity to call the most spiritually awakened veteran I ever met, to make sure he's still doing okay.
Also, I made it two paragraphs into your story link before I broke into guffaws. Gotham in New Jersey... It makes too much sense. LMAO

Fun fact: at one point we were actually supposed to be part of the DC multiverse under the designation "Earth-Prime". Yes, the same one Superboy-Prime is from. Yes, the same multiverse that got literally annihilated down to one universe that wasn't his. As in, matter-antimatter annihilation. I don't personally remember this happening, but then again I wasn't born yet.
