Probably the only review you'll see of My Little Pony: Maretime Bay Adventure for the Nintendo Switch · 2:49am May 28th, 2022
I liked it way more than the special, and it was certainly better than I expected, almost as fun as the movie. I got far more smiles here from the jokes than those in Make Your Mark; the writing was sharper. The only real complaint I have is that $40 is too much for a 2 hour game. But, well, can’t do anything about corporate greed, and it’s tough to compete with indie devs on that front. Regardless, again, thoughts after the break.
Overall, the game it reminds me the most of is Goat Simulator. Both games are exploration/collectathon platformers with minigames where you control a grazing mammal with physics that could be smoother. In both, there’s no risk of failing, so the goal is just having fun seeing everything and messing around. The difference is that Goat Simulator is maximum chaotic meme energy while Maretime Bay Adventure is cute and wholesome.
Here are some highlights:
· There’s a Navi equivalent in the form of Shimmerwing, a yellow butterfly Sunny is friends with who leads her around to exactly where the next objective is. What’s notable is that Shimmerwing is not a regular butterfly, instead a six-winged, fae-like creature. My headcanon is that they’re the manifestation an omniscient eldritch being, shaping the fate of ponykind towards some unknowable outcome. Do not question Shimmerwing; only obey.
· Primrose, one of Pipp’s backup dancers, has a crush on Hitch, but is too shy to talk to him until Sunny acts as wingmare. Also she hides in a crate. New best side character.
· Or, I would call her best side character if not for Marcel, a pony-sized bunny who is also a gang leader with swept back thug hair. He gets the other bunnies to block the road and extorts Sunny for a smoothie and sunglasses before immediately peaceing out into the sky on balloons. Based.
· Getting the full three crowns in the bunny/crab herding minigame is actually difficult, especially considering the low bars on the others. It’ll probably take me another 2 hours of practice just to do it.
· Sprout is still a racist dingus, this time he (poorly) disguises himself as Izzy, Zipp, and Pipp to graffiti some billboards, thus framing the other tribes as bad to get them kicked out of town. In the end he admits he just doesn’t like change, and Sunny and company convince him to, at last, try to be open-minded.
So that's where Morpho Knight gets banished to between Kirby games...
Interesting; thanks for the review.
