Music or no? · 3:45pm Feb 11th, 2022
When you are writing, do you prefer to listen to music or not? And if so, what kind of music do you prefer?
I generally do not listen to music, but I will sometimes if I find a song that is inspiring or puts me in the right mood. For example, I listened to the theme from Terminator 2 when writing The Last Crusade, and I listened to Owl City’s Fireflies while writing Faces of Love. I might put on some hand pan music now and then, but I mostly prefer quiet.
What do you guys think?
Like you I occasionally listen to music, but usually I prefer it to be quiet, it improves my concentration, I find.
I am always listening to music, of any sort, at any given time, unless I'm listening to a Youtube video. :B

My thought exactly. I can’t be caught up in a song while I’m writing!

Interesting! Are there certain kinds of music you prefer while writing?

nope! just whatever I'm listening to at the moment
I listen to a lot of music in general, so there's definitely some overlap between that and writing. Sometimes I make an effort to pair the song and story's moods up, but more often than not, I just don't. There's definitely at least one instance of me writing something excessively mellow/contemplative… while simultaneously bobbing my head to <random Thee Oh Sees song goes here>. Oh well.

I’m seeing a pattern that maybe people who listen to music in general also keep it on while writing. I wonder, does it feel like something is missing if you don’t have music?

it's too quiet D:

Maybe? I've never really thought of it as "something is missing", per se, but I definitely understand the feeling you're going for. I'm not quite sure, really.
That being said, the fact that I'm listening to music as I type this probably says something.
