So hopping along, the next of the Young Six I'm gonna pull out is Smolder. (This time it's only semi-random: remember me mentioning semillon last week? Yeah, I'm having to actually sort this series to make sure not to feature them twice in a row.) So who am I gonna pull out first for Scoota-dragon?

Right. A month or so ago I mentioned that I was getting ready to launch some bigger thematic batches of stories, which is why I was trying to clear up my new authors folder. The bigger one of those was a focus series on the Student Six, which I'd planned to start as soon as a month came up with five Wednesdays.

…Yeah I was supposed to start it last week. Bother.

Followers vs. Account Age: A pointless data review: The Return

Earlier today, I was shooting the shit with Aklinstar about some of the statistics blogs I've done in the past and I noticed there was one I never did an update/follow-up on. I promptly dropped everything to do exactly that, which is because I'm deeply interested in stats and data and not at all because I'm frustrated with the way my

Okay, so changing gears again-again. This time mostly because I have no time. This is one of those weeks where everything happens at once, and I've been positively hopping with how little free time I've got.

But that's no excuse not to talk about how absolutely cool stories are, and honestly I've made it this long without missing an update so I'm hardly going to start now.

It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #44 · 9:04pm Jan 19th, 2022

When I recommend stories that go into M territory, I prefer to give a heads up for folks that things are going to be Not Safe For Work

This is me giving that warning now, because there's a lot of profanity coming up.

Because this week's connecting theme is profanity.

Oh, and Rarity.

We start with AFanaticRabbit and the simply titled Mantra.

Rarity - despite being fabulous - is still a mortal pony with mortal self-doubts and mortal fears. And she has a little way of addressing it: when needed, she'll stop, look herself over in the mirror and state: "I'd fuck me." Just as a reminder that even at her worst, she's still amazing.

This one isn't a long piece, but I find it wonderful. It's got a great flow to it, it's very in character, and it's a moment of believable personality for a character like Rarity. It fits her.

The second half - where Rarity (for lack of a better term) explores just what she means when she says that - is just as solid, but the real power I feel is in the front half because the whole situation is just so Rarity. I love bite-sized character exploration and elaboration like this. AFanaticRabbit is one of the bright writing stars that came out of 2020, and this is a perfect example of her style.

On the more humorous side, we've got the returning Captain_Hairball with Rarity is a Potty Mouth.

For context of those not in the loop/new, back in late 2019 there was a leak of some behind the scenes production stuff, including a bunch of outtakes. One of the stars was Tabitha St. Germain unleashing a number of loud curses. (Those outtakes also spawned a number of Apple fics/art off of Ashleigh Ball's statement "Our mother... was in porn?!") That context isn't required to enjoy the fic, but it's handy to understand where it came from.

So the story itself. Princess Celestia is coming to Ponyville for the first time. (Viewers will note this is taking place just before/during S1E22, A Bird in the Hoof.) It's an important moment for Twilight Sparkle, because she wants to show her teacher how good everything is, how nice her new friends are, and how wonderful the town is. And to help the Princess relax, too! So Twilight's worked hard to make everything perfect. Now she just has to get Rarity to rein in one small, minor bad habit.

“It’s the swearing, Rarity. You swear constantly!”

“I do?”

“Like a sailor, Rarity.”

And while Rarity has the best of intentions, it's easier said than done.

So this one's just pure comedy gold. If you can handle the minor out of characterness of Rarity being unable to finish a sentence without an explicative, it's a riot as she drops profanity and crude phrases left right and center as poor Twilight loses her mind. That's really all about to say on this one - I find it hilarious.

Oh hey! Cheers for the recommendation!

Mantra was a weird one for me, first M rated fic, written because I had a stupid idea at 5am.

Despite me general aversion to M-rated fics, these actually look halfway interesting. And they're short too, which might well be enough to convince me to give them a go. We'll see.

I do enjoy a contemporary fic ballsy enough to set itself that early in the show's timeline. Still plenty of possibilities lie that way!

Plenty of amazing ideas come in the small hours.
