The entirety of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is actually comprised of a lucid fever-dream of Twilight Sparkle after a magical incident that occurred whilst trying to get accepted into Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. In reality, she owns a pet lizard named Spike whom she is convinced is actually her draconian assistant. She stays in her room talking about her magical adventures to his unlistening ears, recalling dramatic tales that never happened. Twilight Sparkle has never been to Ponyville, nor has she become an alicorn princess. Of all her "friends," only Applejack somewhat exists, although her name is in actuality Apple Harvest - it is likely Twilight heard the name at the local farmer's market, as the Apples are large tradesponies throughout Equestria. Princess Celestia, while feeling sorry for the botched entrance exam, barely knows of the Sparkles' beyond her father's position in the royal astronomy society.
Over time, her family moved on. Her mother and father went back to work. Shining Armor got promoted to captain of guard yes, but was stationed in Las Pegasus and has never met Princess Mi Amore Cadenza. Twilight Sparkle lives in her own little world, completely absorbed by the fantasy she has created for herself. She sits alone in her room, with her pet lizard in it's glass tank, and dreams of a world to be.
Hmm... Interesting, that's a cool concept and wouod be interesting to see written out in more detail.

One exception - Cadence was her babysitter as a young filly. So that throws a wrench into the story. Unless her past memories are also warped in which case anything goes.
