Thoughts on the new Chappelle special? · 12:25am Oct 26th, 2021

I watched the new Dave Chappelle special twice, and I loved it! The only problem is, a lot of people didn't. What did you think of it?

Please refrain from getting political. It's fine if you mention the content matter and how you felt about it, but this is mainly meant to be a discussion on the special, not the controversy surrounding it. If you do wish to discuss the controversy surrounding it, PM me. I'll be happy to read your two cents.

I'll be watching the comments in case any arguments break out.

Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it's not satire, it's bullying.

After having watched the special twice, I don't think any of the jokes were a direct attack. In fact, most of Dave's points were about the brittle spirit of the community that protested his comedy. If we can't laugh at everyone, then we can't make humor of real world issues. Controversy is an important stigma because it brings about notoriety, and if comedy didn't have controversy we would be set back to the days before Lenny Bruce. It's not a fight against a community of people, but instead a fight to have an opinion -- even if it be disagreeable -- without the fear of repercussion. Like it or not, we're witnessing something iconic at play.

The only time a joke truly becomes harmful is when it's a direct attack. That is bullying. Directly insulting somebody because of who they are is a malicious way of spreading your message. Being able to laugh at yourself while others laugh with you is the sign of a strong will. It is not an attack on the culture. It is the insecurities of someone brittle taking a joke as a sign of oppression.

Whatever the divide may bring, we can all agree on one thing: the media is fucking stupid.
