Belated G5 Movie Thoughts · 6:39pm Oct 12th, 2021

So yes, I have seen My Little Pony: A New Generation. Saw it the day it dropped on Netflix and the only reason I haven't talked about it sooner is because lazy and busy, I guess.

And I liked it! I liked it a lot, I think it took a little bit and a few rewatches to grow on me, but I think it's a solid intro to G5, if not a completely perfect one. I don't know if I'll start writing stuff for it, mostly because I'm preoccupied with Stallion of Tomorrow and everything I want to do with that 'verse going forward, plus I want to wait until the Spring 2022 special and the following TV series to get a better idea of where it's going before I jump in.

Some assorted thoughts, will be talking spoilers because the movie's been out for weeks now:

-Izzy is adorable.
-That being said, Hitch is a close second for me. Good sheriff pony boy.
-Zipp ended up being a pleasant surprise of a character; didn't expect her to be as likable as I thought she'd end up being.
-Pipp isn't bad, but she really feels like she's there to be "culturally relevant". She's gonna need to grow on me.
-I'm gonna take a risk here and raise an old controversy from the dead to make this point; Sunny's becoming an alicorn carries a lot more "worthiness" than Twilight's ascension did, IMO. I don't know about y'all but I think reuniting the tribes is a much bigger deal than fixing a cutie mark spell.
-Izzy is the new Best Pony. This is an undeniable fact.
-It's interesting how despite Sunny being one of the more open minded characters, even she's not immune to prejudices of her own, assuming at first that Izzy and other unicorns can mind read or fry brains and the like. Even part of her initial case lays in how cool their abilities are.
-Sprout is a spiteful little fear-and-race-war-mongering coward, and henceforth I shall be referring to him as Sproutler.
-I like how Phyllis slowly begins to change when she sees what her own fear-mongering has created, and she realizes that she doesn't like what she sees in the end results of her mindset, I.E. her little jerkwad snot of a son.
-The unicorn children willingly initiate their anti-jinx rituals, but for the grownups it seems to have become a hardwired involuntary instinct that they seem to have no control over once they're set off, as seen in the "bar" scene. On the one hand, that's kind sad. On the other hand, think of the trolling possibilities. xD
-Pipp getting wheeled into frame on strings is weirdly funny. Probably her best moment in the movie.
-No, there is nothing "woke" about an anti-racial prejudice message like what this movie does. That's just common sense.
-Thank God the windigos didn't show up. Honestly, I think they do more harm then good in terms of why the tribes need to stay together. Because if staying in harmony is done to keep ice demons from killing everybody, then it becomes less about doing good for goodness' sake and more of a cheap survival strategy. We shouldn't be good to other races and ethnicities because the demons will come and suck our souls out if we're racist; we should do so because it's good, and I'm sincerely thankful the movie went more along those lines.
-Also I totally called that the tribes would be reunited and magic restored by the end of the movie. What, did you think they'd let it stay that way?
-Izzy is pureness incarnate. On a less spammed-point note, she strikes me as a much more dialed back Pinkie Pie, which I'm grateful for.

And, um, yeah. 'bout all that's off the top of my mind. Might throw in more as I think of 'em. But yeah, liked the movie, 7/10 overall I'd say. Long live pony, may the new generation trot forth.
