New Generation movie!!! · 2:50am Sep 26th, 2021
Seriously If you need a spoiler warning with a title like that, you deserved to be jinxed.
So once I had enough strength to not watch this thing a third time, I decided to share my thoughts here.
And wow, there's so much to love about the new movie, I'm not sure how to break it all down! So this will be a bit scatterbrained.
Visuals were stunning! Every little detail was a treat to see, from heart-hooves to fuzzy hides.
The level of detail was impressive, far beyond what I'd expect from a pony 3d movie. All the little bits of junk and writing on papers added so much, they told their own story of their owners.
I spied a few misspelled word here and there, so maybe the prejudice about earth Ponies being dumb may have a tiny bit of merit.
Sunny and Hitch had a great dynamic. It really felt like if Izzy didn't show up at that moment, Sunny may have either abandoned her family's dreams, or set out on her own.
And Izzy! Izzy, izzy, izzy! She stole the show for me. Her jokes were hilarious, and was just always such a bubbly beacon of light. She was way better than Pinkie Pie in every way. Especially her voice. Her song/rap was awesome, easily competes for 2nd best of them all. And the way she stared forlorn into the campfire in that scene, you realize she must struggle with depression. As the saying goes "those who seem happy, are actually the saddest of all". I felt so bad she didn't get to try her tea set with the others before Sunny ruined it. But that could be the writer speaking through the characters about the runtime.
I wanna break a bit and talk about the unicorns as a whole. They were a disappointment overall. They didn't have much going on. And I'm guessing that they never grew beyond their lack of magic. So I'm guessing they were sent back to the darkages without their magic.
The movie needed maybe 20 extra minutes to really correct and flesh out everything. Especially to explain why the Unicorns are so weird.
Characters
Sprout was a character that could've gone in any direction. Little sorry he was forced to be a villain, I think he could've worked better as a representative of those who were too consumed by fear; instead of the jealous power-hungry pony he was. His song was okay, it was pretty disjointed, and I'm not sure if that was intentional or if it really represented him as an incompetent character.
Hitch. He was good as a bit of male representation. His "critter magnetism" might be a play on how Disney Princesses always have the trust and love of critters. Whenever there's music playing he can't help but groove with it. I felt that he should've "done his part" and win that dance competition. But I understand why Sunny had to win, it just would've made more sense with Hitch.
Was it me, or did the group as a whole seemed to go along with the common trope of 1 male to 4 female grouping?
Pipp and Zipp. I don't have a lot to say about Zipp, she seems to have a bit of mechanical know-how, given she must've rigged up the fan blower. Her real name being Zephyrina was adorable for the tough tomcolt. Fascinating to see the wonderbolts poster.
Pipp is a thicc Cutie. being a social media starlet, I couldn't connect with her that way. And her personality centered around that, so that reminded of how each of the mane 6 interacted too often around their own interests. I loved her voice and her song.
Sunny Starscout. I loved everything about her. Her song in the beginning had so much going on. It took me a minute to remember the thing with the sticker tags. Her personality was varied and fit well to the situation. I laughed way too hard when the pegasi guard made fun if her "tiny brain".
The plot and lore.
There's a lot that seems to be wide open for interpretation.
Sunny's dad's research seemed to border on a role-playing game. So you could think of FiM as all a part of Sunny's imagination.
It's possible that the three pony cities are far separated from the main Equestrian continent.
The jokes were great, and all the moments where the ponys would blow horsey raspberries was hilarious.
I loved everything, up until they reached Bridlewood and seen the first few unicorns.
The plot went in this trending thing where the protagonist has to deal with disappointment and failure.
It may just be me, but taking another movie like Moana as an example, these kinds of stories are a bit disatisfaying to watch unfold; even if things work out in the end, the journey is more important. But I'm convinced it's a generational thing.
The battle went about as well as expected. Seeing the splatter cannon Ponies runaway got a laugh out of me. But it didn't do a good job of teaching Sunny the value of Friendship. She should've told izzy to leave the Crystal behind, but I get that she needed to see that even with all three crystals, they weren't what gave them magic. And I think the writers should've had izzy suddenly use a tiny bit of magic sometime before then. And Zipp and Pipp could've had tiny bursts of flight.
I've no opinions on Sunny becoming an Alicorn. I only hope to see them questioning everything and learning about friendship.
I think Sunny should've been struggling between balancing her friendships with her focus on the quest. But I understand the runtime may have been the limiting factor. There seemed to be a few points where those situations were an option. Like Izzy not being able to use her tea set.
I think that's all I've got. I'm prolly gonna watch it two more times before the weekend is up!
Sorry for the randomness of this post, this was more brain dribbles than anything. Lol.
