So I Watched My Little Pony: A New Generation · 7:22am Sep 25th, 2021
So I watched that new small horse movie. It was pretty good. I'd give it a solid 7/10. I don't feel my time was wasted, I enjoyed it. But I would probably not watch it again. (And those of you who follow my reviews, know that a 7 from me is still earned.)
The Good:
- The pacing. There's some time for characters to have quiet moments, and things move at a fair clip. Neither rushed nor plodding.
- The jokes. Most of the humor landed for me. There's even a small but solid collection of pony puns.
- The themes. Addressing prejudice in children's media isn't easy, and they did a good job of it.
- The genuine optimism that drew me to G4 is there.
- That scene where Izzy explains why she went to Maretime Village.
The Meh:
- The characters didn't have time to let their personalities shine. They each display some depth, but it's really constrained.
- The songs were all okay. Nothing I'd listen to again. But it didn't clog up the movie or anything so shrug.
- The plot is very by-the-numbers. Nothing in the plot surprised me (with two exceptions, one good and one bad). Probably my second-biggest issue.
- JFC stop making peeps into alicorns. Especially when it undermines the entire message of the movie.
The TBD:
- The voice acting was all really good. But all the main cast is all 'celebrities', not dedicated VAs. I wonder how many of them will return to reprise their roles for the series. Most of them have done TV already, sure. I hope to be wrong on this one.
Not sure if the voice actors are going to be back - have there been any leaks as to a new show or more movies?
Suprised there was an odd number of ponies, unlike the original three pairs.

And one of them is even—*gasp*—A STALLION!
Hitch is pretty good tho, prolly my second favorite of the pack.
I have but one thing to say:
Judgement Neigh.
5586912 We know there is going to be a new series, and a special bridging it and the movie. Other than that, official details are fairly sparse.
I honestly kept expecting a second unicorn to join the crew. Not that I'm complaining: I'm glad they went for less formulaic writing (in at least one area).

They were approaching Unicorn Woods and I was figuring "right, here's where they're going to pick up the last unicorn". Thinking about it, I do like what they did and am definitely going to keep watching it.
It was hella fun to watch on acid that's for sure
