Behind the Story: What Were They? · 11:43pm Aug 6th, 2021
It only just now occurred to me that I never did one of these for this story. I don’t know why.
This story was written simply and came from a simple place.
I’m pretty sure anyone who reads my blogs knows that I’ve joined Quills and Sofas Speedwriting. I was talking with The Red Parade in the Discord when he mentioned a possible prompt for the Pillars Shipping Contest that was too good to pass up.
It was a simple prompt, it was just simply a prompt about how historians view people in the past when they were incredibly close. The prompt was between Meadowbrook and Somnambula, about how they could’ve been lovers and historians would just assume that they were really close friends.
I thought that was too good to pass up, so I wrote a comedy story about it.
I decided to go with the escalating comedy angle, an angle in which Carbon would give more and more indisputable proof and Violet would debate him on every part of it. I mean, it didn’t turn out funny because I’m not a very funny writer when I’m trying to be funny (I do slice of life, alright?), but I thought it was a clever joke at least.
That’s really how the story went up until the ending, when the characters met Somnambula and Meadowbrook, which was also mentioned in the original prompt. I wanted to make Meadowbrook just incredibly open about their relationship, while Somnambula didn’t really give a straight answer when asked directly.
That’s basically the entirety of the story. I’ve written a lot of stories recently with some moral or meaning behind them, so you might be asking what What Were They?’s meaning is.
The answer is absolutely nothing, it was merely meant to be a comedy story and nothing more. There’s no moral or hidden meaning behind it, it just is what it is.
And until next time; be awesome!
