    New Avatar!!!

I've spent some time trying to build up my wife's confidence to create art again. This has been a multiple year project, college will kill your passion for what you go to college for. :raritydespair:But recently she offered to make me an actual pony avatar for the site. I had to be gentle about it, I tried to hard like a year ago and scared her off a little:fluttershyouch: but it is here and i

    Guess who's got covid

Don't freak out. I'm fine. This does mean I finally get some time off of work, after a lot of hassle with insurance. Hopefully this means I'll get a few chapters prepared in a few of my stories. On the other hand I have a lot of books to read and video games to play so we'll see.

    Holiday blunder

Well that was really silly of me. I managed to get a few chapters of a story done and decided to make one of them Christmas Hearths Warming themed. But somehow I didn't realize that that one was the third one I had written, not the second. So I had a while extra story in the way of I wanted to post my Christmas Hearths Warming story on the holiday. Oh no, what am I to do.

I'm a little stumped on something to do with a language barrier. It's a problem of translation between bad English and ponish. Due to the fact that I don't typically swear, I'm having a hard time deciding how a pony would swear in a specific situation.
The basic line should be something to the affect of "You're god Damn right..." such and such. Like I said, I don't typically swear, so removing that is part of it, but darn or dang feel a little soft for what I'm going for. The god part I don't know about either. You're Celestia dang right just does not sound right to me.
Any suggestions welcome. I'd love to hear how you all handle dirty language in stories.

'God' can be swapped for 'Faust' (as in Lauren Faust), and a common one is to swap 'fuck' for 'buck'.

HorseApple = bullshit
That's what I have seen pop up for time to time...

But yes faust instead of god
And celestia and Luna instead of Christ (for Christ sake = for Luna/celestia sake) (sometimes also used Instaed of god)

'Shoot' instead of 'shit'
And the one you pointed out yourself 'darn' instead of 'damn'

This one might help a little

So maybe: "You're Faust feathering right,"?
That almost sounds dirty in a different way, but it's still better. Ish

There's also 'ponyfeathers' which is equal to or less than horseapples but maybe it depends on if you're a pegasus or not. In the case of "You're god damn right..." you might switch it up a little and go with "You bet your flank I am/it is/you are" but idk I just read stories lol

That's not bad. It definitely fits and flows better, but 'you bet your ass' might sound a little too, maybe playful to me. Maybe I'm just desensitized to swearing. It's meant to be said during a fight between lovers, so referencing their flanks might take away from the effect. Could be helped by tweeting how it's delivered though. Hummmm
Thanks

i swear a lot in my day to day speaking, but it also depends on whom i'm talking to.

but if it is a fight between two lovers and one of them is feeling like the other one is lying you could use 'horsecrap'... (thats a load of horsecrap)

need to think that a lot of the swear-word in the show or that have been made up is not meant to be offensive or to be used as in insult.

but using pony swear-words is better then using human swear-words as they (for me at least) just takes you out of the story.

but the tone and setting is more impotent, then the use of swear words, so only use them if it feels right, i would say

It's not a case of lying. In the situation I'm trying for one feels the other has said something they should not have, and while they are already in a sensitive state. Basically a, "I shouldn't have said that", "Oh yeah you shouldn't have $%#@@%% said that', sort of thing.
I too believe that having pony swears is better, not just because I don't swear so stand ins are natural for me anyway, but it does at to the feel of the universe.
So the situation does feel like swearing is warranted since this is a knee jerk, "don't ever say that sort of thing ever again" moment. It's just hard to find a fit.

I think you had a pretty good idea with Celestia there:

"In Celestia's name, you are right..." or "By Luna's moon powers, you are right..." seem like something I'd use in a story. I am no friend of some colloquial stuff in a pony story. That's why "Babe" as a pet name always strikes me as off. ^^

5563875
I like: "You bet your flank..."

or maybe: "You bet your cutiemark..."

So I'm currently thinking, "you bet you're feathering flanks you don't need to..." such and such. Adding feathering to make it more forceful. But would that work if they're both unicorn?

5564551
Sure, why not. It's an expression. Could have been imprinted on pony society by pegasi. And it has the same ring to it as the f-bomb while being in tone with the world. I like it. And it's alliteration. What's not to like. ^^

If this post is still relevant...

It depends on how the character talks, for example:

"I shouldn't have said that"

Granny Smith: "Yer darn tootin'!"
Applejack: "Yer darn right! Now shut yer trap!"
Rainbow Dash: "But you did say it!"
Fluttershy: "Um... well...?"
Pinkie Pie: "Really! Come on!"
Twilight Sparkle: "Ahem. What you meant to say...?"
Spike: "Then what? I'd like to hear it!"
Rarity: "How could you!"

But if you must use a cuss word (other than 'darn') then take Digimon's favorite not-a-cuss, 'freaking'.
"Oh yeah you shouldn't have freaking said that!"

Slightly late, but the chapter it was needed for is still unpublished. Part of the reason I was having a hard time was that it wasn't for mane cast. I guess it wouldn't be spoiling anything to say that it's for Trixie, but not necessarily the great and powerful Trixie.
Thanks for the input anyway though.

5580549
Trixie is an extremely pompous character, but she isn't one to get angry. Even when her life is threatened in the episode 'All Bottled Up' (she gets scared) or when her wagon was stolen and sold off in the episode 'Road to Friendship' (she gets sad). This is usually because she doesn't hear what people say, she hears what she wants people to say.

Meaning she twists whatever is being said into some kind of compliment to her; as such she would say something like:

"I shouldn't have said that"

"Trixie will pretend she didn't hear that, for your sake."
or
"Trixie will take that as a compliment, but watch your language next time."
or
"Trixie knows you didn't mean that, but she still expects an apology later."

Of course I should mention that every suggestion I gave (in this post and my last post) would change the course of the conversation and the outcome of the scene, and possibly the outcome of the story, so if you've already come up with something you think works then just go with that.

5581333
I probably will, but I still appreciate the advice. The Trixie in my stories is imagined as a character of two faces. Her stage persona, and who she is whenever she's not performing. That's why I had needed the advice in the first place, it needed to be a little more general. Thanks for the time and advice.
