Seriously, though, horse racing should probably not exist in its current form, even if the horses are well cared-for when they aren't at risk. But I will gladly celebrate any equine-based holiday.

I know and am sorry! I felt like it may have been a mistake to even say something because it was off-topic and I didn't want you to think I was accusing you of anything. I just felt compelled to mention that most betting sports aren't as fun for the animals as you might think.

I don't know if how horses are treated is a problem in other sports like polo, though I suspect it might be; I just know racehorses and some show horses have a risky and/or painful life that isn't necessary. Soring is illegal nationwide, for one example, but still widespread in KY and TN because the organizations are allowed to set up their own inspectors who support the practice. Not enough humans are capable of empathy.

Polo ponies are spoilt, I can attest. Spoilt in the best way! But the exercising is a bit boring... walk, trot, canter, vary the pace, there's a string of you, trainer in the center, keep in line around the grass ring. Good if you want time on a (very expensive) horse shaping your form to the 't'.

This is not to take away from the cruelty of harness and track racing. Or some of the tricks I know the show circuit gets up to. Or carriage businesses. The things people will do to animals make me *so mad*.
