MLP and representation · 2:46am Jul 31st, 2021
Silver Quill has released another video about the G5 series. In his video, he brought up Hasbro's proclamations that G5 will explicitly address race relations. If you'll permit me to provide my 2 cents on the issue, I've always thought that when it came to representing real-life people, MLP's real strength came from generalized examples rather than one-to-one allegories. Take for example the Young Six who represent intercultural relations. Each of them represent the culture they come from, but there is no obvious parallel between Gallus,, Silverstream, Ocellus, Sandbar, Smolder, and Yona to any particular Earth culture. As a result, when they are discriminated or having culture clash, it's more universal and open to interpretation. I believe that if G5 is to explore topics like bigotry and representation, then it must follow G4's example, and not resort to obvious allegories.
