Happy International Asexuality Day! · 9:48pm Apr 6th, 2021
I discovered/realized/admitted I was asexual this year. I've always been asexual, it's just that now I have a word for it.
Asexuality is a complicated topic, and I'm hardly an expert. But feel to ask any questions you feel like in the comment section. I won't be offended.
And to start you off, here's some questions I've fielded in real life so far (mostly from my family).
- What is asexuality?
Asexuality is an absence of sexual attraction to other people. There's a spectrum of it. Some people feel sexual attraction only after a close emotion bond (demisexual), or feel it very rarely (grey-asexuals).
- Do asexual people date/have relationships?
Some do, some don't. Those who don't experience romantic attraction are aromantic.
- Do asexuals still have a libido/sex drive?
Yes.
- How did you know?
Someone asked me if I was asexual. And that caused me to reflect. After looking back on all my experiences, I realized that I had never experienced sexual attraction to another person.
I also reflected on this years ago, after watching Bojack Horseman (which features an asexual character). But I didn't really dig as deeply into it as I did this year. More evidence that representation matters.
- "How do you know if you haven't tried it?"
Have you ever eaten a jagged piece of metal? Have you ever read a book in a language you don't understand? There's a myriad of experiences that I'm sure you've never tried, but are confident you won't enjoy. Same thing.
Here's to finding the words!
5491740 It's a very freeing feeling!
I was wondering when or if you were gonna make a blog on this.
Turns out there was a good designated time for doing such a thing.
