Still pecking away on Midnight Rising and Feathered Hearts...

The two Lemon Zest chapters of Midnight Rising have now reached 26,600 words and they’re still nowhere near done, with probably another 5-6k words to go. Gotta treat the girl right, after all, and also make sure there’s plenty of sexy side dishes around her. And as for Feathered Hearts?

    Still working on Midnight Rising...

At the rate of about 800-1000 words a day. That’s my key to getting stuff done that’s causing you issues; just be sure you put at least a little time in on it this day to have some forward momentum. The two chapters are now up to 24,100 words. I’ll work on it more this weekend, at least around continuing work around the maps and battle graphics I’m making for Feathered Hearts.

Did two things this past weekend...

First, I ran 10k for the first time in two months after laying off that long to let my ankle bursitis subside, trying to allow the area to generally heal up. It appears that it worked. To my delight, there was no ankle pain after and I hadn’t even lost much stamina thanks to hitting an elliptical machine twice a week for an hour instead of jogging. My upper legs are another matter, though.

C&C chapter 40 entering prereads tonight + teaser

Much as I didn’t want to, I made the decision to break it up since the full length of the War Council meeting had exceeded 20,000 words and will probably approach 25k for the now-two chapters before all is said and done. The breakpoint itself will be between learning about the general war situation both Aricia and the Griffon Kingdom face, and then discussing what in all the Crows they’re going

Midnight Rising/C&C update: April showers may bring May flowers...

But of more interest is the emergence of 17-year cicadas in my area. Big, ugly, red-eyed insects that are the size of your thumb but basically harmless, as long as you can get past all the shed skins they leave behind on leaves and the everpresent and disconcertly loud background sound they produce as a mating call. Fortunately, the outbreak in my area seems pretty limited. There's a few around,

Feathered Heart continuation story will release in ten days · 6:30pm Mar 17th, 2021

But it will not yet contain the continuation itself, sorry, since I still have a slew of chapters to get through updating first. :ajsleepy: It will eventually appear in this new story, however.

So why do it now? Well, as it's hard to get people reading and commenting on the edited chapters by blog alone, and I don't want fans to have to wait for new content instead of the merely updated original kind, I'm currently working on what amounts to an all-new bonus chapter similar to the ones I did for Turnabout Storm.

As it's entirely original, I would be permitted to post it under a new story, thus at long last raising the Feathered Heart banner anew and giving readers a place to go--and comment--for the coming continuation. It would also, of course, link to the Google Doc chapter edits, thus placing the bonus chapter in its proper context even without posting the edited chapters to the story.

So what's in the the new chapter? Well, it's going to be a bit of a lore dump. It fills in the gap between chapters 3 and 4 of the original story, which involved a time jump between the attack and Chris and Marco at the end of chapter 3, and then restarting what seemed like a day or two later with our heroes watching Braveheart at the beginning of chapter 4.

So what happened in between? Well, it would seem to me that there is certainly some aftermath of the attack to explore, and decisions to be made regarding how they would protect Chris, Marco and Tara from there on out. I'd imagine Ambassador Goldberg would try to get Marco sent home, as it's established later on he doesn't like Marco, and Gilda would have a long chat with Lieutenant Nantz--who was seen only briefly in the original story--about how to do things going forward.

They would agree that some form of cultural education for civilians and soldiers alike was in order to head off future incidents, and Gilda and Fortrakt would start it by taking our three human friends to a museum--the Kingdom's Hall of Heroes, an enormous museum located on a higher level of Arnau. That is where the lore dump would happen. You'd learn about a lot of historical figures both griffon and non, including some very familiar ones for fans of the Firefly series.

The new chapter is currently 5k words long and growing quickly. I'll aim to have it ready within the next week, with the new story itself launched shortly thereafter. Additional bonus chapters are possible, and perhaps even likely as I go along. I'll post a teaser for the new chapter in the next few days, once the content is a bit more finished and polished.

One final note: by site rules, the new story cannot use the same title, art or description as the old. That has to be all-new as well. So I'll do some sort of play on it, like Feathered Hearts - Chronicles and Continuation (yes, there would be a reason for the plural!) I'll give it some thought, and thanks go to regular commenter Posted for the suggestion there.

And before anyone asks, I'm tagging this blog for Into the Storm readers as the new chapter will definitely tie into the series, and will give some tantalizing hints as to the future feats--and fates--of some of our favorite characters.
