The Iron Horse: Human After All shows how it is done!

The Iron Horse: Human After All by The Hat Man is an excellent example of threading an extremely difficult needle, in this case crafting a teen rated tale with story beats that match the EqG animated shows. The Iron Horse: Human After All does a wonderful job of leveraging the story structure of later EqG shows like The Friendship Games, Legend of the Everfree, and MIrror Magic. 

The Hat Man is also extremely good at giving each character, canon and OC, their own voice that is both familiar and unique. The result is a story that is at once both surprising from moment to moment and satisfying in how it wraps up.
