Once again, I'm here to proudly display the artistic talent of Hoodwinked MCShelster, to whom I am grateful for all her dedicated work on the commissions I ask of her.
In Chapter 95. The Crystal Empire - Part 4, Midnight, Big Macintosh and Thunderlane face off against King Sombra, the Unicorn whose Heart is as Black as Night. At Princess Celestia's request, their mission is to subdue him, capture him and then bring him to Celestia, who revealed to Midngiht that she and Sombra were once adolescents in love until a terrible betrayal tore them apart and Celestia regretted not doing enough to mend their bond.
Even together, the Guardians of Harmony had a rough go of it against a unicorn who proved himself to be not only a powerful dark wizard but also a fearsome warrior.
In Chapter 98. The Crystal Empire - Part 7, Princess Cadance and the Crystal Ponies attempted to vanquish Sombra after he had been captured by Midnight, Big Mac and Thunder. Determined not to fail Princess Celestia, Midnight stood between the power of the Crystal Heart and Sombra, somehow absorbing it for a moment, and then releasing it along with the magic of his Element of Faith. The combined magicks then purged Sombra of the evil that had corrupted him so long ago and restored him back to the good pony he was.
Sprawled on the courtyard, Sombra is overcome with fear, horror, self-disgust and remorse... but Midnight, with the remnants of the Crystal Heart's magic bleeding out of him, is the first to forgive and offer Sombra his hoof in friendship.
In Chapter 124. The Midnight Dour - Part 4, Midnight, having been haunted by a dark presence that spurred him to act on his anger, frustration and fear, becomes desperate to purge himself of whatever this malevolent voice is, especially after he lashes out and makes Twilight cry. Using an ancient ritual, he succeeds... only to unleash an evil that is old yet new upon Equestria!
In Chapter 125. The Midnight Dour - Part 5, Princess Celestia is furious with her agent, the Hooded Pony, for unleashing an evil force upon Equestria... until the hooded Pony reveals it is time for old sins to be redeemed, and by who...
In Chapter 130. The Midnight Dour - Part 10, after receiving a vision of a possible future of happiness for himself and the pony he loves, Midnight is given the strength and the will to face his dark side by a most mysterious force of benevolence, maternal and divine.
Near the end of the same chapter, having proven his worth and redeemed himself, Sombra, having earned his Alicorn Wings, is hailed as a hero and crowned Equestria's newest Prince! After making a speech, Sombra faces his old flame and restores the bond they shared by asking for her hoof in marriage!
