Interview with Dewdrops on the grass · 1:35pm Jan 9th, 2021

Interview with DewDropsontheGrass

Snow Heart:

“Alright, now tell me, my dear friend, what inspired your username?”

Dewdrops on the Grass

One of my favorite things to do is take a walk in the mornings. There's something about the morning dew, sparkling in the sunlight, how in colder months it can freeze and twinkle like little crystals, or how in summer it can help keep the grass cool under your feet in the heat. But I didn't want to just go with Morning Dew, because that's overused, so I went with a bit of a twist on it instead.

Snow Heart

“What drew you into Mlp?”

Dewdrops on the Grass

I've actually been a fan, off and on, ever since I was a little girl. I liked playing with some of the toys, and I enjoyed the Gen I cartoon, though it's been ages since I've watched it. I didn't enjoy any of the later cartoons until Gen IV, but I was hooked the instant I saw the pilot.

I've mostly stayed quiet about my fan interest though, as I tended to feel a bit awkward amongst most other fans.

Snow Heart

Who's your favorite pony and why?

Dewdrops on the Grass11/01/2020
This is a tough question, because I love most of the characters, and it's easier to list characters I dislike than like. I've vacillated between many of them over the years. So I'm going to give this question two answers. In terms of purely pony, purely FIM only characters, Twilight Sparkle. She's intelligent, she's a little bit odd at times, sarcastic, but most of all she tries. She often makes mistakes or makes people feel uncomfortable without meaning to, but she's almost never coming from a position of malice. Plus she loves reading, and I do too. (I used to be the kind of girl who'd take home twelve or more books from the library and read them all before the three weeks was up.) I was never upset at her gains the way some fans were, like becoming an alicorn. That just seemed like a logical way for her character arc to go. I can relate to her quite a lot. I can relate to all of the Mane Six, but Twilight I think I relate to the most.

~
However as I said, this is a two part answer. My second part is, if we include characters from the wider universe, such as Equestria Girls... I'd have to pick Sunset Shimmer. Now, why Sunset? Because she's got everything good about Twilight, as well as having a redemption arc. And unlike Starlight Glimmer (who, in all fairness, did grow on me after a while) she ends up at the center of everything, always in the wrong place at the wrong time, which is something I can identify with too. And she's just... she's awesome. I love her sense of style, her attitude towards love, and I do very much love her singing voice as well.

Snow Heart

“Favorite episode and why?”

Dewdrops on the grass

For FIM, it will be season 7, episode 13. The Perfect Pear. Why? Because it held an emotional maturity that few other pony episodes could match, it answered long-standing questions about the Apple family, and because it made me cry. A lot. For EQG: Easily Rainbow Rocks. I know that's a movie, not an episode, but EQG's a little odd in that regard. Rainbow Rocks was perfection incarnate.

Snow Heart

“What inspires you to write?”

Dewdrops on the Grass

A lot of things. I have an active imagination, and frequently daydream. At some point when I was much younger, I started turning my daydreams into stories. I generally prefer to write fanfiction rather than original fiction. When I enjoy a work enough, I find I become attached to the characters. Their journey, their story, they're like my friends. When I read or write fanfiction, I'm spending more time with my friends. So I'm often inspired to write fanfiction by wanting to have a good time with them, so to speak. Let them breath some fresh air, do something different. I often like to write them out of their traditional element, mix in things from other genres, such as science fiction. (I love science fiction.) Or, like the story I'm currently writing, a Danganronpa crossover with FIM/EQG. When you like characters, you want to do right by them. Or write by them, you could say.

I also write to help deal with stress in my life. I have a lot of stress, so my writing often ends up a bit darker in nature because of that. Hence, again, the story I'm writing, with murder and mayhem. By writing fiction about suffering, you can help cope with your own. That said, there are lines in my writing I will never, ever cross, such as non-consent. I also generally prefer to avoid writing anything explicit unless it properly serves a story to have such detail in it. And the vast majority of stories don't benefit from that detail.

I don't think I'll ever be professionally published as a writer. My writing style is a bit sparse, more Robert Heinlein than J.R.R. Tolkein, and I sometimes fall into traps of using the same descriptors over and over again. But I don't need to. I write for myself. That's my inspiration, most of all: to help myself be better, and in doing so, help me better to others.

Snow Heart

“Give us the background of the author! Tell us all about you. Well in a short summary.

Dewdrops on the Grass

I've lived all over the United States, and have been to a few other countries as well. My family hails from Europe, and my father is a second-generation immigrant from Ireland. My mom came from a farming family, and was a third generation descendant of immigrants from Germany. So I've been around. I spent some time in the U.K. when I was younger, which has influenced some of my speech in terms of word choice. I love science fiction, both hard and soft, and some high fantasy. I read a lot, and I do often play video games as well. I'm in my early 30s, married, and I mostly keep to myself. I work from home. No kids, and I don't want them.

Snow Heart

“With Mlp coming to an end, tell us one thing you have learned from your experiences, and how it has helped you to grow?

Dewdrops on the Grass

FIM helped opened me up to ideas I hadn't considered before. It helped keep my mind open and fresh, and helped me explore some aspects about myself I wouldn't have otherwise. I also made a couple of life-long friends, including my partner. Most of all, what FIM did was help me figure out how to actually make friends and keep them. I won't lie: I haven't had a lot of friends. I was a girl who kept to myself, and was often bullied. So even as an adult there were lessons I needed to learn. I wouldn't say that FIM taught them to me, per se, but it did help solidify them, via friends I made, opportunities that were presented. So it helped even this old girl be a better person. And I hope that's what it's done for everyone who's watched it.

Snow Heart

“Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Dewdrops on the Grass

I want to thank you for conducting this interview. I was more than a little flattered when you offered, and I appreciate how you try to help spread the word about people on FIMFic whose works might otherwise go unnoticed. So thank you, and thank you to your readers as well. And to everyone who reads this, please, keep in mind one thing: if you write, you've gotta write for yourself before anyone else. Because if you write for yourself, it means something to you. And that matters.

Snow Heart

Thank you for allowing me the pleasure of interviewing you, you have truly been a pleasure to talk too. I hope you continue being awesome.
