How does the game work?
I’ve tried looking online for some answers, but it’s leaving me very confused. As far as I can tell, there is a dice system and you make your own character. I know Ogres and Oubliettes is supposed to be based off of that game, but I’ve never played it myself and I want to be as accurate as possible when I’m writing my scene.
Well, the game works mostly by just rolling a 20 sided dice and adding bonuses you get on your character sheet.
Fo instance, if some one asked you to make an intelligence check, and your character had an intelligence of plus 2, you'd roll a d20 and add 2. The game really depends on your Dungeon Master more than anything, as good or bad DM can make or break the game for you.
If you want to be accurate in O&O for a story, I would recommend using the D20 system above, although O&O didn't quite do it in the same way as dnd itself. For instance O&O in the show seems to have the main characters roll a D20 for something as simple as putting their head through the bars of their prison cell, while real DnD the rolls are kept for more... Difficult things like climbing. Rock wall using athletics or figuring out the backstory of a location or character using history.
