This is partially a Patreon update, partially just a place to talk. So I've officially started putting up chapters of my original novel that I'm writing onto my Patreon at the middle tier, the title of which is Bare Knuckles & Butterflies. I'm not sure how many of you, if any, are interested in reading something like that by me, but I figured if you are I may as well tell you all a little bit about it.
Bare Knuckles & Butterflies is a novel that rotates perspectives between two characters: Alata Kalek and Imogen Cole. It has an undercurrent of odd fantasy to it because this story did actually start out as an EQG fic that I was writing, and by that I mean I got about 5k words in and realised it was so divergent from the show's canon that it may as well be an original novel. So I figured, well, why not?
Alata Kalek was originally Sunset, albeit my version of Sunset who I'm sure you all know is a little off-kilter. Plus, she's evolved somewhat from that origin. She retains the hints of her past though. Alata is a displaced being from another dimension, although instead of a colorful magical pony dimension, she was fleeing execution by a being that's a bit like an Eldritch Horror of pure order. Alata came to this world and found herself trapped in an alien body that was plagued with chronic pain from the transition between dimensions. Since then she's spent the last several years waiting for the conjunction that would reopen the Iris that brought her here.
Imogen, although completely human, is actually a lot more complicated than Alata. She's a fascinating little ball of trauma, nerves, and repression, and to be honest I didn't really base her on any one character. If I had to draw a comparison to EQG, I'd say she's a halfway point between Fluttershy and Wallflower Blush, and in a word she's a victim. Every part of her life pushes her down from her total lack of social skills and friends to her abusive home life, to the point that Alata, who regularly bullies her, is someone she looks forward to seeing because at least Al pays attention to her.
If it weren't obvious, they're the romantic interests. Getting to that point though? As always, that's the fun part.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that progress. You guys are important to me and even if like, only five people ever read this book I write, finishing it is important to me, and so are all of you.
