Plea for Participation · 7:50pm Oct 27th, 2020

I'm not an especially superstitious person, but when I see two blogs on the same subject show up within a minute of each other, that's a clear omen. For my fellow Americans, see here and here for some great electoral resources if you haven't already voted.

And remember, anyone who tells you not to vote in an election doesn't have your best interests in mind.

And remember, anyone who tells you not to vote in an election doesn't have your best interests in mind.

Same thing applies to anybody who tries to stop you from voting.

I voted already. Long live Strahd von Zarovich! Like... forever, long.

Seriously though, vote, ppl.

Yes, an omen, and surely not because two people happened to see the same message/post/article somewhere else as it came out. The truth is out there!

Already voted at the office in town. No messing around with ballot drop offs or mail pickups.

Speaking as a non-American, seriously go vote.

Done my part. Took care of that six weeks ago.

Don't blame me. I voted for Bill and Opus!

Seriously, both candidates suck.

Please also remember these things (I'm an election judge in Illinois, but it's good advice notwithstanding):

Do not show up with any kind of campaign anything, even parody anything. That can count as campaigning and most judges will just ask you to remove the piece in question. Nor try to talk politics with judges, as we're legally not allowed to talk about it, and trust me, we want you in and voted and out again.

ALSO no one is allowed to accost you at your polling place. They need to be at minimum 200 yards away, and if they're aggressive or unrelenting (or handing out anything), you can inform the Judges about it, and they will either ask them to cease, or in the case of anyone being aggressive, can call the police on them. Poll watchers are also only that: watching the polls. They cannot go up to voters and talk to them, as they have credentials they will lose and will be reported (same deal as above if you see this).

Wife and I stood in line for an hour in the cold wind, listening to our kid whine. We told her this was important and she needed to see it.

Also, told my kid that if everything goes well, we'll have our first woman Vice President. My kid, still pissed off that no women have walked on the moon, is excited by that.

And once you're done, don't stop there. If there's changes you want to see happen, go volunteer or donate. Work together to move the nation.

Can't we just leave politics out of this place? :fluttercry:

Normally I try to, but I make an exception for the really important bits. And spreading a message of "please participate in the process" is pretty darn important.

*shrug*

It's your blog...

Sorry, no, people are dying.

Already voted, now to wait and see what happens.

5387059
Indeed.

It is inevitable.

Well, I sent in my ballot by mail, so I may have voted. Unless some right-wing fanatic set fire to it, or purposely delayed it, or outright threw it away. We'll see how the tracking goes... if it works.

Never attribute to malice what may be explained by incompetence especially when it comes to government

I always vote, no worries.

5387076
Hanlon's Razor does not apply when people are open about their malice, though.

5387069
You trusted your vote to the US postal service?

5387082
That's what the tracking is for.

I've already voted, as have my sister and brother-in-law.
Now all we have to do is wait and see Trump lose.

5387084 Yep.

5387076
The news stories I'm referring to are undoubtedly driven by malice, as the perpetrators have either been arrested or are the subjects of a criminal investigation/search. I mean... how does one firebomb a ballot box accidentally?

As my other choice would be to break quarantine and drive an hour and a half to a polling place that the local militia will be "supervising," yeah. The USPS is pretty damned reliable, despite conservative propaganda to the contrary.

Disirregardless of whether the service itself reliable, there's going to be an awful lot of ballot envelopes sitting in unsupervised boxes in the next week. It wouldn't be that hard for a bad actor with a key and a costume to take them home, change the contents, and re-mail them. Time consuming, maybe, but not hard skills-wise.

In years past, mail votes weren't numerous to matter and were primarily sent weeks or months in advance. I don't buy into any nation-sized scheme, but there's going to be a lot of local elections that could be swayed by a box or two and it could be awfully tempting to take advantage of a new opportunity. There's already been one case of someone succeeding in setting a ballot drop-off box on fire and (so far) getting away with it and that's an official box just for ballots. I doubt the security on random mailboxes is higher.

Still, I'm lucky enough to live two blocks from a polling place with nary a militiaman in sight. If I had to drive an hour and a half, I'd probably mail it in, too.

I will most certainly be voting. But it is possible that, somewhere on the ballot, I will vote for a candidate that you would not have voted for.

And remember, anyone who tells you not to vote in an election doesn't have your best interests in mind.

You’re being unfairly presumptuous, FoME. They may be complete dumbasses.

Planning on voting day-of ... mostly because I don't trust the system not to screw with early and mail-in ballots - hell, there's been at least one instance of a ballot drop-box set on fire.

5387144 I'm suddenly really glad that Election Day isn't in the middle of wildfire season.

"Disirregardless?" :twilightoops:

I love you, man! :rainbowlaugh:

I think it's like antidisestablishmentarianism.

Aye, thanks, FOME!

As an overseas observer from the Magical Kingdom of Finland, I strongly encourage every American user here to vote, and vote in the down-ballot races too, if they haven't voted already.

More participation in the democratic process is always better than less.

Yee, everyone should research both sides, and vote.
