Ranking the Applejack Expys From Worst to Best · 2:32am Oct 13th, 2020
This list is the hardest of all to do because not only does Applejack have the least amount of expys at five (tied with Rarity) but she also has very little in the way of actual expys that can truly count because she has so little character (she's a farmer, she's stubborn, she's down to earth, that's it). One of these expys is from Equestria Girls, but it's hard to truly define where these expys should line up even though this is the result of my personal opinion. And no, Sandbar doesn't count just because like Applejack he is the most easily forgotten and the most straight manish of his circle of friends. Aside from that he has nothing in common with Applejack besides being an earth pony.
5. Apple Bloom
Why she's on the bottom: Although Apple Bloom did, to an extent, want to be like Applejack she is also the CMC member who made the biggest strides to be independent of her big sister. "Where The Apple Lies" even showed that she's willing to lie even though she knows her big sister is all about honesty no matter what the situation may be. She does have her stubborn streak, but even then we saw in "Pinkie Apple Pie" that this runs in the family and isn't unique to just Applejack and Apple Bloom. Ironically, she became more like an unintentional Applejack expy in "On Your Marks" when it was clear that she couldn't hold an episode on her own because she had so little in the way of personality or goals independent of her cutie mark (something Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle definitely had).
4. Rockhoof
Why he's not on the bottom: Rockhoof's connection to Applejack is through strength, which while not bad is hardly the thing you associate Applejack with. And yes, I get that telling the truth and being honest is not easy and requires a lot of determination, but it isn't necessarily a measure of strength to do so. Rockhoof is the pillar who has the least in common with his mane six member he's tied to, and sadly he got the shaft in "A Rockhoof and a Hard Place" when they basically just used him for a bunch of jokes and gags that just seemed to be a case of "It's funny 'cause he has an accent."
3. Gladmane
Why he's in the middle: Gladmane may not seem like much of an Applejack expy at first, considering he's willing to tell lies and turn ponies against each other while pretending to be nice. But what ultimately puts him into the category of an Applejack expy is that he doesn't try to hide or deny that it's who he is. When challenged he basically adopts the mentality of "The ends justify the means" and he willingly brags about keeping everyone under his control. He's content to be who he is, even if who he is is a terrible pony who doesn't hesitate to abuse and control others. The reason why I count him as an Applejack expy instead of the Flim Flam brothers is because those two never bother with honesty outside of maybe their debut, they always resorted to bending or stretching the truth while trying to claim they were doing nothing wrong (even if they were).
2. Sugarcoat
Why she's not on the top: Sugarcoat is the only shadowbolt besides Sci-Twi who got any real development or personality in "Friendship Games". She is the literal embodiment of blunt honesty, she'll tell it like it is without bothering to put it nicely and regardless of whether it's warranted. With Applejack, at least the pony version, we saw that she can sometimes lie by omission (you tell the truth but not the whole truth). Sugarcoat doesn't have that, though whether this is because she's incapable of understanding empathy or because she just chooses not to care what others think is unknown. And we never get an answer during the movie, and while she might have been somewhat supportive of Sci-Twi initially she was more than willing to cave in to peer pressure during "Unleash the Magic". So ultimately she just misses the top spot.
1. Yona
Why she's on the top: Even if she ended up becoming more of the next Element of Kindness when all was said and done, Yona still definitely had a lot going for her in the honesty department. She was never afraid to speak her mind about anything, and even unintentionally answered Smolder's question about whether Yakyakistan was perfect in an honest way. And Yona made it clear who she was and who she wasn't ("Yaks though, just not nasty."). Like all yaks she had her stubbornness, particularly when she didn't want to give up on Sandbar and to a lesser extent when she wanted to be a pony so she could "fit in" at the Amity Ball. Heck, "She's All Yak" even showed that like Applejack she wasn't much for fashion (but if "The Last Problem" is any indication she and Sandbar live at Carousel Boutique so Yona might have started studying under Rarity). She's not a perfect Applejack expy, but none of these characters really are and Yona is the one who comes the closest. So for all those reasons I'm willing to put her on top. Like I said, it was hard to do this list because Applejack doesn't have much in the way of character and what she does have isn't necessarily something that can so easily be made into another character.
And there you have it, I might maybe do a list re-evaluating and ranking all the Equestria Girls films and specials tomorrow but after that I probably won't do much else in the way of blogs until I get more comics for Christmas and things here in the U.S. start to settle down after the election (probably won't be for about a week or two before I'll know how it's gonna play out).
To be honest, I also saw Gladmane as Applejack’s opposite.
