An Exercise in Positivity · 1:31am Sep 25th, 2020

So, it turns about that the Mulan remake tanked. :ajsleepy: Yeah, that hurts. I know I shouldn’t take it personally, but I kinda do. You see, the two biggest contributors to my enjoyment of a work of fiction are if a story or its characters are able to connect with me on a personal level or if they end up offending me on a personal level. I mean, there are other contributors, but those are the ones that have the most influence on my opinion. However, because I connect to my favorite movies and shows so personally, I tend to take other people’s dislike of my favorite movies and shows personally also. :ajsleepy:

On top of all that, my mood has been off all day today. :applejackconfused: A story I’ve been following updated, which is great. However, the contents of the latest chapter succeeded in making me horribly sad. :fluttershysad: Then, I ended up hearing a relatively sad song while I was watching America’s Got Talent on YouTube, and I couldn’t just stop listening to it because it was just such a beautiful song. I kept going back and forth between loving it for being beautiful and hating it for being relatively sad. :facehoof:

As weird of a day I’ve been having today, I have decided to channel all those tumultuous and somewhat negative emotions through a positive outlet by listing what I liked about three movies that greatly disappointed me. The movies are going to be listed in order of least disappointing to most disappointing. By the way, if you’re going to leave comments on this post, I strongly encourage you to refrain from putting up negative comments. :ajbemused: Remember that this is an exercise in positivity. Actually, I encourage you to attempt this exercise yourself. Your opinions might not change, but maybe your mood might improve a bit. Let’s get started.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

  1. All the new songs were beautifully written and touching, and the actors actually sang them well.
  2. Ro used the movie’s soundtrack to make an EGMV miniseries that restored my support for the FlashLight ship. (Psst, I know you might be getting tired of hearing me bring this up, Ro, but thank you.)
  3. The way the movie chose to portray the Beast made him remarkably endearing.
  4. Maurice is a good dad.
  5. Belle wasn’t COMPLETELY unrelatable.

Legend of Everfree

  1. I liked most of the songs on the soundtrack. They were fun.
  2. Sunset Shimmer was a good friend to SciTwi.
  3. Flash respects SciTwi’s choices enough to not go the crazy jealous guy route despite being hurt, disappointed, and possibly heartbroken. He’s such a good boy.
  4. SciTwi eventually got over her fear of magic and helped save the day.

The Last Airbender
Disclaimer: This movie was so disappointing that I couldn’t even sit all the way through to the end. :ajbemused: I think CinemaWins covered most, if not all, of the movie’s positive aspects, which wasn’t much. I’m probably going to have the hardest time being positive about this one, but I’m going to try anyway.

  1. Dev Patel did a pretty good job portraying Zuko. The weirdly worded dialogue aside, I definitely got angry, broken, parentally abused prince from him.
  2. Not even terrible dialogue can keep Uncle Iroh from being best father substitute.
  3. The kid they casted for Aang looks the part, or at least, he would if he smiled more. :applejackunsure: Yeah, actually, Zuko and Iroh were the least disappointing parts of this movie. :twilightsheepish:

Okay, I still think these movies were pretty disappointing, and I likely will never rewatch the last two. :ajbemused: However, I am feeling much less sad, so that’s a win in my book.

Equestria Girls:
Introduced the best non Mane 6 character that should have joined them

Does your positivity usually come with this much salt? :applejackunsure: I mean, that was quite salty for a positive comment.

Okay, why were you being sarcastic? :applejackunsure:

Alright, I'm ages late for this, but I just now remembered that I had not only your stories but your blogs to catch up with :twilightsheepish: (Your Mulan review will have to wait a bit more though. Stuff happened, that's all I'll say :facehoof:)
Anyways, this seems like a cool excercise! I'm going to try it:

The Lion King (2019)

  • The singers were pretty good, in fact I listened to the soundtrack on loop for quite a few days. I liked the new songs too.
  • James Earl Jones was still Mufasa, obvious win.
  • Zazu had some pretty funny moments that probably did surpass the original.
  • The Lion Sleeps Tonight. I simply liked this version better 🤷
  • My opinion on the animation style aside, I gotta give praise to the animators, cause it's clear that they worked their butts off to make the movie look as realistic as it does. As an animator in training myself, I know darn well how hard that is, so, credit where it's due.

Toy Story 4

  • The animation, as expected from Pixar, was top notch. I specially loved the backgrounds and the lighting throughout the film
  • I actually really liked all the new characters, specially Ducky and Bunny, their scenes were pretty fun.
  • It spawned Lamp Life and Forky Asks a Question, both of which I really enjoyed.
  • This point is minor and kind of silly, but I liked the gag of Buttercup wanting Bonnie's dad to go to jail. My friend and I cracked up at those at the cinema for some reason :rainbowlaugh:

And you pretty much covered all I actually like about Legend of Everfree already :derpytongue2:

Also, you're welcome again for that set of EqGMVs. I'm still really proud of those (and what I achieved with them :raritywink:)
