Notes on Calico Driftwood and My Namesake's Origin

Here's some background music. I'll be going on a bit of a tangent, so you may be here a little while. ()^_^

The chapter with Levi Vs. Calico is coming up pretty soon. There are some notes on the latter that are too lengthy for me to share at the end, so I'm going to lay them out here instead.

    Status Update, April 2024 Edition

Part of my slowness in writing M.L.G.'s latest chapter is for the usual reasons: tiredness, minor depression, having other things on the mind, that sort of thing. However, in what can only be described as "whimsy", I've recently decided to complete a list of all of the intentional shout-outs and references in the story as of the most recent chapter.

    Something To Think About

I have a message to share with prospective authors. If you go into writing a story---be it as a living, or just for fun---don't automatically assume that what you're doing is wholly original.

    Tired, Running On Empty

That pretty much summarizes my mental state of the past few days. Constantly tired (half due to not getting enough sleep and half due to my walking regimen), and I can't really think of things I want to write for the story. You know you're having trouble finding things to talk about when your brain fishes for tuna, but ends up with guppies instead.

...

...Sorry. I'm been in a bit of a downer mood lately after hearing about the fires in the western part of the country. I'd read about this one couple that were packed to evacuate, but decided to stay due to information that turned out to be faulty. They're not around anymore to warn people about their mistake, so I might as well do it for them:

If there's a disaster incoming, be it man-made or natural, and you're instructed to evacuate, you grab your necessities and go. No lingering, no waiting to see what happens, no comments of "no one tells me what to do". You stow the bad attitude and LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. When your life's in danger, engaging in mass stupidity's the worst thing you can do. Too many people have made this mistake--their FINAL mistake--in recent years, and quite frankly I'm sick and tired of reading about it in the news. I legit almost started crying when I read about that couple mentioned above.

...And considering that my home is somewhere in the vicinity of Tornado Alley, I hope I have enough sense in me to charge for the basement when the sirens start blaring instead of staring obliviously at my laptop. I didn't survive twelve years of my classmates mocking and harassing me or fifteen years of Crohn's just to let nature's darker side get the last laugh.

...

...To the few of you that read this, I'm sorry that this isn't more upbeat. My plans to lose weight haven't met with much success, so it doesn't look like I'll be able to work on the fanfiction I wanted. May as well use the old Brooklyn Dodgers' rallying cry: "Wait 'til next year!"

Gonna sign off for now. Ciao mein, and stay safe and sane, everyone.
