Mimic Slime Story: Ch8 · 4:08am Aug 10th, 2020

Things always go exactly according to plan.

Patience. Thinking back on my past, I had far more patience before I met my accomplice, but I don't believe it is necessarily its fault for complicating things. Interacting with creatures makes life complicated, and in a city as large as the one we are in, that means there's a lot of complication—but also a lot of food.

I leaned across to my accomplice and whispered, "The worst bit is we can't even talk freely."

"Yeah, I know that. We have enough money to keep this up for a few days before we need to do anything serious about it. How are you doing for food?"

"I can wait that long too. I—" The door of the tavern opened and three men walked in.

The first of them had to dip its head to get through the doorway. Taller than even the paladins who'd visited after I'd killed the priests, it was bristling with knives and the handle of some larger weapon peeked above its shoulder.

The second, of more average build, wore a cape and had leather armor covering most of its body. A pair of knives on each hip, it had a distinctive scar that wound up one cheek and crossed its eye.

The third looked scrawny. It wore only pants and boots and its torso was covered in tattoos and healing burn marks.

The big creature's face was pulled into a scowl, the shirtless one looked a little scared, while the face-scarred one looked—

"Handsome. Rakish. Dripping with personality." My accomplice's words cut in on my thoughts, but I was glad to have its opinions. "Okay, if he doesn't come to us, we can approach him and make an offer. We are working, after all."

"Have you worked like this a lot?" I asked.

My accomplice sighed and looked down at the table. "Enough to know I don't enjoy it as much as some. I've heard some girls practically—"

"This's not good. Two lovely lasses sitting on their own?" The voice of the caped guy was warm and full. I could pick it out clearly, and started to focus on how it sounded and—when I looked over to it—how it moved. The creature pulled a chair up at our table and sat on it backwards while leaning on the backrest. "What would it take to put a smile on these faces?"

My accomplice smiled at him, something I tried to mimic effectively, and reached a hand out to tap her mug. "A drink of something stronger than this swill would be a start."

"You know, I was just thinking I'd like to share a little something with two beautiful ladies." It held up one hand and snapped its fingers. I was focused on its gestures and movements as well as its voice. When the female creature from the bar brought over three drinks in very small glasses, the male creature's smile widened further. "Would you please join me?"

It didn't take as much intelligence as I had to figure out what it was doing. "Are you trying to get us drunk?" I added a little laugh on the end, mostly because I didn't want to drive this "fish" away.

"What? Of course not. Just easing things. You know how it is, I'm sure." It reached out to me and ran its finger along the underside of my form's jaw.

I let loose a little giggle that seemed appropriate, and got a smile from my accomplice. "Easing sounds nice." Another giggle, since our target seemed to smile whenever I did that.

"What my sister's trying to say is, a little lubrication helps, but a few coins help more," my accomplice said. "Two silver each."

"Sisters?" The male creature looked surprised, but there was more to it than that. "And you—?"

My accomplice raised an eyebrow and turned toward me. Extending one of its hands to cup my form's jaw, it leaned across the table and kissed me.

I didn't have a wealth of knowledge about this particular thing. Always in the past, kissing would lead to acid would lead to eating—in very quick succession. I could remember how kissing looked, though, and let my eyes flutter closed as I made soft sounds while attempting to at least look as if this was enjoyable.

When my accomplice pulled back and left me leaning forward a little still, it surprised me and got a little groan from our target.

"Four silver seems good," the male creature said, and lifted one of the little drinks up only to gulp it down quickly.

I reached for what was obviously my drink and brought it to my lips. The taste of it in the air was horrid, but alcohols weren't a problem for me to deal with so long as they were not too strong or only stored internally. Mimicking drinking, I stored the drink in its own membrane for later disposal.

The male creature took my form's arm, and my accomplice's when it had its drink, and turned us toward the hallway at the back of the building we were in. It turned its head toward the other two. "Sorry, lads, you'll have to find your own entertainment."

The big creature let out a grunting laugh while the smaller one a sigh.

"Right down here, my lord." My accomplice led the way, slipping its arm slightly free but keeping hold of our target while I kept his other arm busy squeezing me.

I could have eaten it right there. It was so close to me—touching me—that it would be the simplest act to give it a little acid. But, I had to wait. Patience was easier now that things were progressing.

My accomplice opened the door of a room and led us all inside. It turned back to look at our target before jerking harder and pulling it onto the bed as my accomplice fell backward.

The male creature seemed to know what it wanted to do with my accomplice. While it was busy, I closed and locked the door and started slipping out of the clothes I'd been wearing.

Our target turned to look at me, seemingly forgetting my accomplice. "I didn't know there were goddesses living in this city…"

My accomplice reached to something on the male creature and squeezed it, earning a sigh from it.

While they both watched me, I put one of my form's arms across my form's chest—a gesture I'd seen female creatures do before when in the presence of male creatures.

"I could eat you both all up. Get over here and let me have a taste." The male creature was literally inviting its death, and hungry as I was, I would not disappoint.

I moved closer, letting my form sway a little as I'd seen others do to gather attention. When my accomplice slipped out from under the male creature, I knew this was the moment. Reaching down to the male creature, I pressed my form's lips to its and kept my eyes open to watch as my form's hand—on the back of its neck—squirted some acid into it.

"Don't mind me, Tess, I just don't like watching this part," my accomplice said, turning to look away.

"I understand." With my form's lips still pressed to the male creature's, I couldn't make the sounds with them—not a major problem for me. The first hint of recognition dawned in the creature's eyes as its body went limp.

But its eyes, rather than looking terrified, looked furious—and glowing.

Pain exploded all over me. Pain and burning. In a panic I squirted a lot more acid into its body. "Get back, accomplice."

"He's a mage!" Rather than move back, however, my accomplice stepped closer and drew its dagger. In agony, I watched as my accomplice brought the knife down and pierced through the ear of the male creature and shoved down firmly—then shouted and fell back.

Everything was going wrong, though the creature we'd come to kill was now dead. Trying to ignore the stunning pain, I oozed closer to my accomplice and saw where just the fumes of my acid had touched the skin of its forearm. I only had two sources of liquid to use to neutralize it. First I picked up its knife and stabbed my own body, then I grabbed its arm and pulled it into me.

My accomplice looked terrified. It looked like it would scream and run. It stood there instead and let me neutralize the acid on its arm—ignoring the meal behind me.

"Sorry, it was the only thing I could think of to stop the acid."

"You're not—I knew you wouldn't, but I just—" I knew my accomplice liked hugging me, it had certainly showed that it enjoyed just being held sometimes—but this was the first time it got close to me while I wasn't a particular form. Its hug was also slightly excruciating thanks to my burned cell wall.

The hole in my membrane was painful, too, but my accomplice needed to be calmed. Burning through energy rapidly, I adjusted my form back to something more like a creature and then further—becoming the duplicate of the creature we'd just killed.

With my accomplice's arm sticking from my form's chest.

"The burning's stopped." My accomplice slowly pulled back to reveal what looked very much like a vicious and red smoke tattoo on its forearm. "Eat him and let's get out of here."

I turned to the corpse on the bed. "Are you sure you're okay? I would have used the alcohol from earlier, but I didn't know how that would react with the acid." Approaching the bed, I could taste the fumes of the body and my hunger flared.

"Yeah, just a bit shaken. What would have happened if you hadn't—?"

I began slurping up the mess of the creature from the bed through one of my form's arms sunk into it. "There was enough of it on you to remove your hand and possibly forearm."

"That's what I get for being helpful."

"But we did it. Thank you." The meal, delicious as it was, lacked something. The surge of intelligence that usually came when I devoured an intelligent creature was weak—barely there. It wasn't a huge leap of logic to assume that the interruption in my feeding caused it. Physically, the meal was satisfying, but I almost lament the loss of a truly uplifting meal.

Yeah, don't get too comfortable. The mimic slime is still toxic to human life, even when it doesn't intend to be.

5332849 Why just have acid when you can have fuming acid.

Why just have a pit, when you can have a hungry pit?

Why just have tentacles, when you can have black tentacles?

Why just have lust, when you can have Unnatural Lust?

Two silver each.

You fool! They're clearly adventurers! Upcharge, they can afford it! :raritywink:

But it's eyes, rather than looking terrified, looked furious—and glowing.

Told you.

A mimic slime's feeding habits are much like eating a bowl of cereal with milk. You have to get through it quick before all the good bits get mushy. Lesson learned. Still, time to get that cult going.
