And the laptop's dead · 8:25pm Aug 3rd, 2020
Well, no sooner did I post my last blog post than the Acer Aspire 5 laptop froze, and appears to have given up the ghost. Can't even get it into safe mode by any method, thanks to Windows 10.
Got to the logic page, tried to restart with the power button, and now it's stuck on a black screen with the arrow key, which moves but nothing else has happened for half an hour.
I think that means at least Windows has totally crashed.
Using an old Mac I got from work a while ago.
UPDATE: It was modestly functional this morning. I got it to run a full antivirus scan which had taken all night. Found nothing. The diagnosic scan of the harddrive found that it's fine too. It looks like a whole bunch of Windows background programs, mainly maintenance and update and other such things keep activating on and off, which then makes the antivirus unhappy so it scans what's going on.
It also uses up massive disk space and gets stuck frequently. So I think I'm looking at some sort of incompatibility with the latest Windows updates or errors it can't repair, or my RAM is dying. Might be antivirus incompatibility, but that's easy to test as I just have to turn the program off and see if the system settles down. Or maybe the processor chip is failing... which would be too expensive to fix, since it's just an old Acer Aspire 5 laptop from 2016. All the files are backed up now in an external drive, so if it's still alive when I get home tomorrow, I'll turn off the AV to see if that does any good, then move on to a full Windows reinstall. If that fixes it, then the updates were the problem, if not it's probably hardware.
clearly the unparalleled brilliance of my presence on your post fried your system
Maybe your laptop was a BNA fan?
:P
5328408 I've gotten it running well enough that I did every single diagnostic possible and a full antivirus scan... and found zilch.
So, either the latest Windows 10 updates F'd something up (I'd bet real money on that), or it's also possible the RAM is dying.
I've backed up all my files on my external drive, so I'll do a Windows reset with my USB Windows recovery after work tomorrow. If that fixes it... TA-DA! If not, it's probably the RAM. Hopefully it's still a RAM card that I can easily replace.
The final possible issue is the processor... in which case I just trash the thing and buy a new laptop. The repair to the replace a processor just isn't worth it. It's just an Acer Aspire 5 from 2016 and only cost $500 brand new, and it's pretty worthless now.
5328406 It's running Windows 10... I think a literary review of "Run, Spot, Run" is enough to fry it.
Good luck with fixing and/or replacing it.
