Reflecting on Magical Mystery Cure. · 3:28am Jul 19th, 2020
This week's Episode Rewatch is Magical Mystery Cure, and it seems even Equestria Daily is still lamenting the huge controversy that occurred when this episode dropped. Despite seven years since, people still resent Twilicorn but why? From what I understand, people hated this change because we now had a fourth alicorn in the show, this change was done without input from Faust, and people thought this change would ruin Twilight.
To speak from personal experience, what I didn't like about the change at the time was I felt the writers didn't do a good job of making the change seem organic to Twilight's growth. Sure, they tried to build up that she earned this, but on a character level, it falls flat. What season three needed was some episodes where Twilight felt like she hit a brick wall with her studies. She could have read every book in her library. Celestia could have no more lessons. Twilight could feel restless, like she's not challenged enough and she has nowhere else to go. She might even try taking charge in one way or another, just to try something new, and possibly enjoy it. Then, she suddenly becomes a princess, Celestia explaining that Twilight is ready for the next phase of her journey. By doing that, I feel that Twilight earning her wings would feel more like apart of her own personal growth as opposed to something that was just given her.
Controversies aside, how do I feel about Twilicorn today? Despite the sloppy execution, I can't deny that Twilight did set an important precedent: showing that the writers are not afraid to shake up the status quo. Because Twilight earned her wings, she gave us the Castle Of Friendship, Starlight Glimmer, The School Of Friendship (and subsequently, the Young Six), and helped take Twilight's story in new directions that led to her becoming ruler of Equestira. I do appreciate the changes the characters made throughout the show's run. If they just stuck with the same characters who never changed, then the show could easily grow repetitive and dull. Even a controversy like Twilicorn at least gives fans an excuse to debate and speculate, providing a more interactive experience, even if it was negative. Part of the reason why I've been writing the blogs is I wanted to share what I thought about the changes and direction of the show. Despite the drama, I am thankful for Twilicorn, and all she gave us down the line.
