Need a bit of help + Gonna be out of town · 4:56am Jul 3rd, 2020
Okay so first of all, it seems that Shadow of a Doubt had been reposted, without my permission, to Wattpad. This has never happened to me before, so I'm not sure how to go about it just yet. Any and all advice is appreciated. I'm assuming I just go for a copyright violation, but at the same time I'm not 100% sure if that's the right choice. Doing that asks for a lot of information so I need to be sure.
It sucks. Don't repost my writing without permission. This person never even bothered to ask, and I have no idea who they are either.
Anyway, onto the 2nd point of this blog: Starting tomorrow, I will be out of town, without internet, until the 12th. It's an annual family thing. I wasn't actually planning on mentioning this, just leaving a note on my profile, but whatever while I'm here. I had been hoping to update SoaD before leaving too, but was a bit too preoccupied to do so, and now the update will have to wait until I get back. Apologies. I was going to read some fics instead but now I'm dealing with the above issue.
Ugh.
Anyway, obligatory art because relevant.
Oh and one more thing while I'm here... Anyone else here got an Art Fight?
Yeah, if you want it taken down you'd need to file a DMCA takedown notice.
It looks like the reason that it asks for so much information is that it's an actual DMCA takedown notice and not a "copyright strike" that sites like youtube use (there's not really any penalties for filing false copyright strikes since they aren't legally binding).
About the Art Fight, I do now.
A DMCA is your best bet, besides messaging the author but I think you need a Wattpad account for that. I'm sorry this happened to you
While it is a dick move to not ask for ur permission, I personally wouldn't call for a copyright strike since fan fiction itself IS a copyright violation. And I wouldn't do it either if they're not profiting from it. At least I would've call them out on it and ask for credit too.
But that's just my take, U can do what U think U can. After all it is still a dick move and I understand ur frustration.

Well it says there can be repercussions if it's false on Wattpad, and in a way there shouldn't be because the words are mine, even if the characters & settings aren't. There's still that niggling feeling that somehow I might get in trouble because of that.

Yeah I need a Wattpad account for pretty much anything on the site, I tried to look at the responses to comments to see if anything was said, but I couldn't. It's a whole new experience and not even a good one.

Okay so I'm actually sorta in the same boat as you. Because yes, it's a fanfic of copyrighted material, and yes, as far as I know, they're not profiting off. But the point of the matter is that SoaD is readily available on Fimfic, and it's not at all hard to ask anything about it. I have my DeviantArt, Twitter, and Tumblr all linked in my profile, and chances are they have an account on one of these sites, or could even have asked me anonymously on Tumblr.
There was nothing stopping them, yet they didn't even try. So I guess I am calling them out for not crediting me? Whether it matters or not, it seems they haven't added anything to the story since the 6th chapter anyway.
Whatever the case, I'm probably going to have to wait until I get back home on the 12th to try anything anyway. I'm hoping I don't have to go as drastic as a DMCA.
I'm totally on your side, but it needs to be pointed out that the reupload only has 60 views at the moment and has not just not been updated since the sixth chapter, but also hasn't been updated since May. Though it's a scumbag move to do something like that without giving you credit, this unfortunately happens all the time and it's in no way worth the trouble of filing a DMCA. Any MLP fanfic with some kind of following is going to get far more recognition on this site than a reupload on Fanfiction.net or Wattpad because most brony writers don't care about Fanfiction.net and Wattpad anymore, finding this site to be a much better alternative.
I'm just saying this for your sake, don't sweat the small stuff. Rando story thieves are nobodies, you're you.

Yeah, after returning from my trip I just decided to not touch it. Though it did bother me at first, it really isn't worth reporting if they aren't really bothering with it anyway. Plus I have more important things to deal with in real life, so it's not worth the trouble.
Though if they were to reupload on Fanfic I probably would do or say something, because I actually have an account there. Like I've said before, it's easy enough to just ask. Even if I'm not the biggest fan of the site anymore, I could still upload if enough people asked.
