My Reaction to the "Best of" Pony Life videos. · 12:25am Jun 26th, 2020
Disclaimer: I haven't seen the first episode of Pony Life because I am waiting for it to come out in the U.S.
The "Best of" Pony Life videos are here to finally give me a clearer idea of what this show will be like, and I would like to share my opinions. First off, I would like to clarify what I said in my previous blog regarding the Pony Life promos. I think my blog was harsher than it should have been. Truth is, I was getting so angry at the lack of marketing, that I was kind of expecting better when I did see any, and what I saw did not improve my confidence in Pony Life. After seeing the "Best of" videos, I still have my doubts this show is going to be all that good, but I do see some of the positives.
Positives: I'll admit, the show definitely had it's moments where it showed it could exaggerate the characters in amusing ways like how Fluttershy tried to out-cute her cat or when Pinkie literally exploded into confetti. Although I'm not sold on the character designs, the show's background art looks cute and colorful. I also do appreciate that they got the voice actors to reprise their roles. If nothing else, having the cast back will make this show worth checking out.
Negatives: The humor was poor. I didn't laugh once. Also, the more I look at it, the more I realize that the animation is really poor. The characters don't look like their properly standing on solid ground. It's especially noticeable when the character is on stairs. She looks like she is floating in midair. After ten years of MLP:FiM, it's easy to forget how much the show had revolutionized Flash animation. Before, Flash animated cartoons looked really bad (just look at the later seasons of Johnny Test as an example), but the folks at DHX were able to create a show that still holds up. Pony Life does a disservice.
As I was watching the videos, I was reminded of Equestria Girls because that too was a series I wasn't too impressed by. While the series got better with time, I didn't follow it as closely or as enthusiastically as I did for MLP:FiM. Even so, I just saw it as this cute little side series that I would check out every once in a while.
My guess is I will have a similar reaction to Pony Life. I will always treasure MLP:FiM, but Pony Life might just be something on the side that I will watch when I'm in the mood.
