How Do I Stop Caring? · 10:04pm Jun 5th, 2020

This sounds horrible, but how do I stop caring so much? Everything is just breaking my heart and I'm shutting down and also stress eating. I'm so fucking privileged yet I do jack shit with it and just watch suffering all over the world from the comfort of my unaffected fortress. I hate myself so much.

How do I stop caring?

Do what you can, then—and this is critical—recognize when you've hit your limit. A lot of people working together can shift the world, but no one's expecting you to build barricades in the middle of Paris and shout-sing to rally the photogenic rebellion. There's a wide spectrum between doing nothing, doing your part, and performing a deus ex machina.

Realize when you can do more for the cause by taking a break and coming back refreshed.

Find one small thing you can do. Do that. And then you’ll do whatever comes next.

You know your shitfics? Apply the mindset that goes into posting those to your other actions. The dissonance amuses me, the fact that it turns out you didn't actually learn the thing I said you learned... not so much. Either that, or you genuinely don't care about getting banned again, in which case... also a good start? I guess?

Sorry. It just really annoys me when Israelis are like "owo I'm an innocent smol bean pwease no attacky me". It's like when the schoolyard bully tattles after their victim punches back. Or when police complain about how scared and vulnerable they are as they regularly abuse and murder us.

I don't even know what I know or care about anymore. I just want to burn it all down and start again.

I don't see how you are 'privileged.'

To answer your question: There is no nepenthe to stop you from caring. If you don't feel like doing something about it (and that's probably a good thing, because you'd be burning down your own neighborhood like a fucking animal), try talking about it. And maybe actually use your brain and try to think of reasonable solutions, and not just screech about how bad things are.

Also, you might try a little harder to empathize with people. I mean, idk what all this nonsense about you going off on some Israeli person is, but just because someone is of a certain nationality does not make them a horrible person. I mean, you seem to hate America yet you're an American, so would that make you a horrible person? Also, NO ONE should ever have to be apologetic about being a certain nationality or race. Anyway my point is that you seem to harbor so much hate, I think letting go of that and trying to better understand people might be beneficial to you.

Well, I think a significant part of my relative calm about the current situation is that I basically expect that to happen slowly and naturally anyway? I believe that our current global civilization is not sustainable and has for decades not really been in a place where it can plausible turn into something that is. Even back in the seventies, it would have meant major changes; now? Between the hammer of resource depletion and the anvil of pollution, I'm expecting a collapse, already begun, playing out over the next few hundred years and resulting in another dark age in and from which various future cultures will take shape. So that has some major impacts on my perspective about the issues of the day; it's not that they don't matter, because they do affect, for better or worse, the people here now, and generations ahead, and could potentially have influences all the way into and through the dark age... but those are influences, in a time of uncertainty, not the sort of firm control that would be involved if, as is commonly believed, our civilization was going to keep progressing onward and upward.

So I want people to not suffer, and to have justice, and safety, now, and for their children too; I still care about them. But I don't see the fate or the world as we know it, or even the country, resting on this; those, to me, are already dying, and it's just a matter of seeing how the details work out.

As for what you can do for those people here and now, and how you can hopefully feel more at ease about that, some prior commenters here have some good advice, I think. :)

Good luck!

...Are you replying to comments on a different post there? Does that actually work?

Yes it does work. And yes, I’m trying to forestall that ecological and societal collapse you are talking about they helping to implement socialism and other radical changes in our collective existence.

Realizing you can't do anything when you're debilitated from despair can help. When you're like that, you're not helpful to much of anyone, least of all yourself. It's a very dark road, the thought processes that lead to the hopelessness and frustration toward our political station. As Lofty Withers said, it's perfectly fine to take a break from all this nonsense. It's difficult to look the other way, but it's not like people are going to die because of you. Those with power to help others in a more robust still have to take breaks for their own good. There's only so much any one person can do, even people in powerful places. You can help people in your local community, and you can try win people over, but all the horrible shit going on around us has nothing to with you (or any of us here), so it's nothing but harmful to blame ourselves and feel guilt over it.

I get the feeling, but the problem is that this solves absolutely nothing. Nothing is solved, nothing is repaired, nothing is saved. What we can do is work toward something better, one step at a time.

Just don't dump that on someone because they're Israeli. That blog really was not the time and place for something like that. Whether they support Israel's actions or not , they still have to deal the consequences of what that country has done. Those consequences being the instability, insurgencies and other assorted fun.

Yeah that was a dick move on my part

"Yes it does work"
Ah, neat.

"And yes, I’m trying to forestall that ecological and societal collapse you are talking about they helping to implement socialism and other radical changes in our collective existence."
Right, but what I mean is that I, at least, don't think forestalling it is really possible now. So I see a lot of people who, in various ways, are trying to do something that can't be done, or just assuming it's the natural state of affairs, which leads to cognitive dissonance and stress given the conflict with the reality of the situation. I won't tell you to stop trying to do good, because the details of the decline can still be changed, and even striving towards an unattainable good goal can had good done by the striving that would not have been done otherwise. But I think that if you focus too much on the goal vs. the good done along the way, you'll, well, see the blog post this is a comment to. Because you can't actually win, with your end goal, without being an actual miracle worker and a very powerful one at that; no one could.

And it's not all bad; this ecological collapse will be followed by an explosion of new life, both into the niches left vacant by the collapse and by the space formerly occupied by overgrown humanity. Humanity itself should survive just fine; we're a hardy, adaptable, and widely-distributed species; sure, it'll be a dark age with almost everyone existing at a subsistence level for a while, but we've climbed out of those before and will again. Many of the good things about our present civilization will be lost, but many about the bad, too; I highly doubt, for a relevant example, that the conflict between "Black" and "White" will persist, since those are, after all, rather young and arbitrary (and foolish, I would say) categories, and people will have other things to worry about. There will be new prejudices, probably, and other negative aspects to the new civilizations, but new goods, as well -- and someday, they in their turn too will fall.

...I hope this is helping? It kind of seems like it either would, or the opposite; very sorry if it's the latter.

Thank you for the apology. I have unblocked you now, since things seem calmer, and I hope you will accept my apology for that as well.

P.S. I happened across this article which includes list of constructive things to do about the current political situation, which you may find useful.

Hey I was going to apologize further on Discord, but it looks like that's not needed. You have nothing to apologize for. I was out of line. Sorry again for that.

Simple, you are not guilty for the sins of your ancestor, you did not commit those crimes yourself.

Nothing can change the past. Period.

You can only strive to forge a better future.

My advice: Just treat people as individuals and not lump them into "groups" and judge them by the actions individual people take.

Judge them not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
