...how does an pony with fur get sunburned? :rainbowhuh:

Source: Between Dark and Dawn screencap

This has just been bugging me. First of all, Luna is covered in fur, meaning the skin is protected from sunburn.

Second of all...even if we assume that, in MLP canon, ponies can get "sunburned," Luna has way more melanin than Celestia because her fur is dark blue rather than white. Which would mean she's less vulnerable to sunburn, if anything.

By this logic, Celestia should have dark fur and Luna should be the albino.

Now, it would be believable if Luna overheated in the sun. This makes a lot more sense. Dark fur absorbs a lot of heat from the sun, which would show how Luna can't enjoy sitting on a hot sandy beach all day.

Maybe they actuall not have any fur and is skin. :twilightoops:

Assuming pony fur is not like fur on our animals on Earth. That it is actually living cells that has small blood flow in each hair and has a very different chemical makeup than our hair or skin (they are aliens that just vaguely resemble horses after all, not actual horses). It is probably a mistake to even assume they are mammals.

Horses and ponies can get sunburn it is sometimes Rare but in darker coated horses and ponies can get sunburnt and horses and ponies with pink noses can also get sunburnt Which can lead to cancer in the future but as long as it isn’t a extremely hot day A good dollop of sunblock and a rug will stop sunburn

I see your points, but I think this is one of those things that will never have a real answer - much like Pinkie Pie's abilities. Like Twilight concerning Pinkie Pie's abilities, you're over-thinking something was probably intended by the writers to be a simple joke.

Simple, because her fur is dark and attracted more heat her coat set itself on fire, thus the burns.

Maybe Luna was burn by the sun because she's the princess of the moon and she is less tolerant to the sun counter to his sister who is the princess of the sun so she can probably resist way more.

Short answer is it depends. They could potentially get sunburned, but their fur or some covering like sand or mud works just as well.

Also, it turns our that hippos sweat out blood... except it's not. It's an antibiotic sunscreen.

How does a horn get sunburnt? It's obvious a good dollop of cartoon logic with magic mixed in for good measure can do anything.

It might be covered with skin, or something similar. (It does share the same color as the rest of the body after all)

Two words: Alien horses.

Celestia and Luna are lizard ponies.

The outside of a horn might be bone but it might have a flesh core or at least some sort of nerve endings in it, i say this becouse narwhal horns and elephant tusks have nervee endins inside them heck our teeth are bone and they have nerves inside/atached to them so its not impossible that expsureto high heat would couse pain

actuall her coat that sunburn I would know I own a horse.

I have no bucking clue.

All hail DWK sensei.

all furred animals can get sunburns on their skin unless their coats are dense enough to completely shade the skin, but even winter coated furiers get burned. thin coats definitely. i've had and treated dogs, horses cats, goats, cows, long and short hairs, coarse and fine. you may not see the burns (obviously), but if you pet them on a burned area, they'll let you know but quick.
