Now read a thing about Emily trying to levitate a pebble. This bit of story isn't canon anymore, so I feel like it'll be fine to dump it here. 
"Let's... let's just get on with it," Starlight's voice sighed. "And before you ask, no, levitation doesn't necessarily need line-of-sight to work, nor do you need to point at anything."
Figures. No cool wand-wavy tricks, then.
"I doubt that you'll be doing any wand-wavy tricks anytime soon with how top-heavy that thing is."
Emily's eyes turned to the crystal she tied to the end of the stick with a shoelace.
"'Kay, so we're just gonna start with levitation for now," Starlight continued. "I want you to find something that you'd like to lift, and envision it in your mind."
Emily nodded, peering around at her surroundings. Her attention set on a small rock. It looked kind of like a small shell of sorts, but at the same time was already obviously a rock, so it was a rock that looked like a shell but really wasn't a shell and--
"Focus, Emi."
Right. Levitation. She closed her eyes, letting the image of the pebble sink into her head. Visualize the rock. Be the rock.
She cracked an eye, peeking at her target.
"It's not working, Starlight."
"That's because you're just thinking about the rock. You need to also concentrate on where it currently is, and where you want it to be."
"Right."
The rock was on the ground, so if she wanted it to float, then she needed to think about it not being on the ground. Simple enough.
"Is it working, Starlight? It's not moving anywhere."
"I..." confusion seeped into the mare's voice. "It's not? That's more or less how I learned the spell."
"Maybe that's 'cause you're a magical floofy unicorn and I'm not."
