The next Firefly chapter is well on the way, but even at 8300 words written is not coming quickly. The last three chapters, I found, pretty much wrote themselves as I was doing scenes I'd envisioned for a while. This time? I'm trying to thread a very difficult plot needle and so far I haven't succeeded, either according to myself or the one prereader who has looked at it. Without giving away the game, this has turned into a Fell Flight-centric chapter that's trying to set something up; the problem being that that particular something may or may not be a good idea.

I think it can work, but I'm not there yet. If it does, it could be another very powerful scene and a tool for character development of two major figures. If it doesn't, then at best, it's just awkward filler like so much of the DBZ TV series was.

My hope is that as I continue writing, I'll figure it out as I have so often before. But there have also been instances where I failed utterly in my first published attempt [*coughcough* The Attorney chapters on Five Star Service *coughcoughcough] and ended up having to completely rewrite entire chapters. Here's hoping that doesn't happen here, but I trust my prereaders to tell me if they think something's not working. They've prevented me from making mistakes before.

Regardless, I'm aiming to have a completed draft by week's end, and a possible chapter launch by Sunday. If I decide this isn't working and to redo it, that will unquestionably slip. And after this, it depends--I might wish to go right into the scene I'm trying to set up. Or I may decide to shift back over to Nightmare Night after four Firefly chapters in two months. We will see.
