1st anniversary of #BoycottBrunei · 12:26am Apr 3rd, 2020
On April 3, 2019, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, announced the imposition of Sharia law. LGBT people there are punished through death by stoning, 40 lashes, and 10 years of imprisonment. It was widely condemned by the United Nations and many media outlets, calling it "medieval", "uncivilized", "inhumane", and "a return to the Stone Age".
George Clooney wrote an open letter calling for the boycott of 9 hotels owned by the Sultan. He asked readers to consider how “we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery.”
I take my hat off to Clooney for expressing his support and compassion towards the LGBT community and I 110% disapprove of the Sultan making his country a living hell for people who are different from the rest of society, express their distinct and honest selves, and have their own lifestyles to live.
Glad to hear Clooney raising awareness about this.
I hate Clooney both as an actor and as a human being, but when you do something right you do something right.
