Believe it or not, I actually got some chores done today.

And that's saying something, because if Diablo IV was this good at any point last year, it would have definitely been near the top of my Best Games of 2023. You know, instead of being omitted entirely.

So let's just say that Armored Core VI absolutely just got smacked out of the running for Best Yesteryear Game.

    Updates and Such

Well, as a thunderstorm rolls overhead (and hopefully doesn't knock power out), I thought I'd offer some updates on what I've been up to.

Long story short, I'm pretty much in gaming overload at the moment.

Ugh.

So far, Doom Eternal is what happens when you take an amazing, simple formula, and fuck with it just a little too much.

I started to get worried when id called this 'a thinking man's Doom'.

I'm sorry, but who in their right mind wants to think for a game like Doom? Right now I've exited the game, after staring stupidly at the mission objective marker behind a barred area for 10 minutes, trying to figure out what kind of platforming nonsense I have to do to get it, when I should be just pumping demons full of lead until they fall over. Now I have to try and aim for weak points. Missing means wasted precious ammo.

And this "combat" loop they keep referring to; it's not fun. Very little ammo around the map. Nope, if you need more ammo, you need to chainsaw a fodder demon. Need health? Glory kill. If you run out of ammo, you cannot rely on your comically useless melee attack. Better to wait for your chainsaw to recharge.

16 max rounds in the shotgun to start.

I'm still very divided. Every time the combat starts to get awesome, some complicated platforming section comes in, and I don't think I'm even a quarter into the game so far.

It's good but definitely not as good as DOOM 2016. I've done maybe 3-4 missions (hard to tell cause how long they are) and I'm still waiting for an explanation for the god damn space station you have in this game. Combat does improve as you collect more weapons and upgrades (I pretty much prioritize increases ammo compacity) so I imagine by the midway point a lot of the issues won't be as bad as they are at the start.

I don't mind the platforming, it took some getting used to but I rarely get stuck now.

It's such a mixed bag for me.

On one hand, the combat and even the exploration feel good for me, and the weapons are satisfying and it feels so smooth.

On the other, the UI is trash, the number of enemies in certain areas is absurd, having to chainsaw every 5 seconds for ammo is annoying, some of the powers are worthless and I forgot they even exist until the loading screens tell me to use them, the game's got way too many tutorials that stop the flow of combat and ruin the introductions of new enemies and the first boss fight is atrocious.

Oh, you've defeated this super-cyberdemon that you've watched being built through the whole level? Well, FUCK YOU! THERE WERE TWO MORE YOU NEVER SAW, NOW FIGHT THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME IN A TINY SPACE WHERE YOU CAN'T DODGE SHIT!

Still, I want to say that my experience is mostly positive, but I'll withhold judgement until after I've beaten at least the main story.

Kind of reminds me of the original Doom and Doom 2. There were a few places that you'd just get 'stuck' because you missed a switch, floor trigger, and/or key card.

Having lost my eyesight, I was not able to play neither Doom 2016 nor Doom Eternal. However I listened to a friend beat Doom 2016 and it was largely a lot of demon slaying, go to next area, kill another hoard of demons, etc. Quite fun and therapeutic but missing that nuance of discovery from the original games.

My son is currently playing Doom Eternal and has run into some odd blocking points. However he says the map helps clarify a lot of the "Where am I? What am I supposed to do?" moments.

I truly wish I could enjoy this game as, in the day, I was quite good at Doom. The only reason I didn't play Doom 3 is because they upped the system requirements to a 1.4 Ghz processor and I had a 1.2 Ghz processor. :(

Honestly, I haven't played it, but seeing the trailers and hearing interviews made me think that they had ruined the game. Honestly, platforming has not room in a Doom Game. And aiming at weak point has no room outside a boss fight.
Doom is about simplicity of movement and flow of combat, and things like platforming and weak points ruin that.

There's a data entry to be found at the lower levels of the spacestation, I believe

The game feels too much like a hack and slash.
