Ok watch the episode where they go into Harely's brain again. They use a highly offesnive slur by one of the characters who is coeded as jewish(the guy with robot arm) and his partner. They say the term "Jewish lightning." This is a phrase coming from the belief that burning down a house for for insurance fraud is an actions that greedy Jews will do, hence the term "Jewish lightning." Having that antisemtic term be used in the show without comment shows the writers antisemtism, and yes I know Halpern's( a writer) father is jewish that means nothing, people who are jews or related to jews can be antisemtic. Also the writer and producers excuses are pretty terrible and fake.

I'll link the issue when I get home. In short: he was a low-level goon with a family who was already a loser but was self aware and a decent guy with a fondness for Kites. He turms to supervillain after a sting operation with Batman against the Riddle led to the death of his son and the dissolution of his marriage. He's not motivated by revange now, though; he's just a decent guy who isn't very good at most things and has a hard life. Imagine if Boyle from Brooklyn Nine Nine was a supervillian

Interesting take, especially at the end, about how the profits of a commercial tv show will always trump any ideological purity the show pretends to have.

What surprised me after I watched your video is that I looked up Harley Quinn and it is a subscription service show. I understand how a free tv show that makes its money through advertising and merchandising of its own content needs to prioritize targeting audiences who buy the most toys. But if a show makes its money through a subscription service, I would think their highest priority would be making the show of high enough quality that you keep re-upping your subscription to DC Universe.

In your experience, is ABC Television more likely to have truly woke programming because it ostensibly doesn't have a profit motive?

The Jewish stuff was handled about as well as the gender stuff - Harley's Jewish family stuff was also miserable to sit through. I wouldn't have watched past the third episode if I wasn't trying to make sure the script was right.

If that's the case, then I'll have to go back to my other points: The wokeness is still a good marketing gimmick, and it provides cover for the sex appeal and sexualization of the characters. Being subscription based rather than merchandising based doensn't change that.

Different profit methodologies change the kinds of risks you can take, what is and isn't safe. But not having advertising =/= not having a profit motive. Then we get into public broadcasting, but that's a different comment someone will have to ask me to write

On your point on profit motive I both agree and disagree. When it comes to you sales with the current idea that there are boy toys and girl toys I agree. However i do think that you can have a legitimately progressive show for profit motive. Imagine if Harley Quinn was written by actual progressive feminist people, it would still be created for profit and cynically work on using progessive values to get people watch so they can make money, but the content of the show would be completely different even if the goal of it was the same. No male plant, kiteman or antisemitism, Harley Quinn is a badass supervillan, but it is still telling you "your fighting the system by watching this! Now give me money!" But the creators have the same values as you, their just also cynically manipulating them.

5215923 Humor is hit-and-miss. Humor in the modern age is worse, since there are so many woke-ites out in the audience to shout "That isn't funny!" (one of the reasons many comics don't tour universities anymore) I watched that episode of Harley, and I think they did a fair job at poking fun at classic Jewish stereotypes, in that particular cartoon's way. (Deadpool has changed so many international memes)
