First Blog and new story! · 12:27am Feb 26th, 2020

Hi, Melody Song here. This is the first blog I've tried writing, so I decided to use it to post that I wrote a new story. It's called Stars in the Shadow of Night. I created it with help from SilverWolfIMHP. Go check it out, it's about an alternate universe where Equestria is at war with Dragons, Griffons, and Changelings.

A story about an alternate universe in which Equestria is at war with Dragons, Griffins, and even Changelings?

... Yeah, I could see that happening.

Now having said that, before I commit myself to checking out the story, based on the description I just hope this OC isn't the 'only' character who feels that 'war' isn't the only solution to get through to them. If the subject of 'war' itself has taught me anything, there's no such thing as 'good against evil' because when we look at where each side is coming from, what we think of our enemies as being bad they in turn feel just the same about us. And at the end of the day, there's no such thing as a 'good' war. Many people die and not just the combatants; entire villages are left in shambles; a once beautiful landscape becomes nothing but desolate wastes; and no other form of life would dare think to tread along such broken grounds.

Who knows? Maybe this guy will find at least one or two members of the group that Equestria's fighting against who feel the same about the war, but find they have no choice because any say against fighting would make them deem as deserters or putting their lives at stake. But hopefully, perhaps once they see they have some common ground and perhaps they aren't as different as they initially believed... Perhaps this universe may offer some hope that there's still a chance to end the fighting peacefully, to restore Equestria back to its former glory.

BUT... At the end of the day, you are the narrator of your own story. You have a vision you wish to see fulfilled no matter how long it takes. Whatever you ultimately decide to do with the story, I sincerely hope for the best and if it's truly worth the read.

That...what you suggested is surprisingly close to what actually happens in the story. And I will be adding bits in later chapters about it not being all so black and white like you mentioned. But I'm more surprised you came so close to what actually happens...

Let's just say I've read these kind of stories before and that one episode of 'Steven Universe' taught me about looking at 'War' in a different way. On one hand, we have the people who feel that serving in the war is an honor, about representing your country, fighting to put an end to our enemies before they end us, and when we come home there will be a big party in which we're awarded medals, we are praised as heroes, and we leave our marks in history.

But on the other hand, there's the negative aspect of the story that headlines 'try' not to bring up but it draws people's attention anyway. Of all the veterans suffering from PTSD and other side effects to fighting, so bad that they find no reason to carry on. And I've already said enough about what happens during war, so I'll try not to repeat myself. The way I look at war, there's good and bad effects that need to be addressed, and before we jump into assuming that everyone we stand against are evil, we must ask ourselves how they feel about us?

We think of all the times we denied certain people the right to vote, to attend our schools, to work in our job fields, or even to own and operate a car just because their groups did something horrible (Like the 9/11 incident or Pearl Harbor). But the fact is: The people who aren't actually attacking us, they are no different from the likes of us. They have families, they work hard to make money (Or put bread on the table), they have dreams, aspirations, and even though the Gods they worship aren't like ours, in a way I find it as looking at the 'same story' just told another way (Like the same kind of superhero portrayed by both Marvel and DC, but with different origins and characterizations and canons). So when we think about it through this story, do the Dragons, Changelings, and Griffins ALL want to fight?

Are they all just greedy hording creatures that enjoy the thrill of battle? Scourging and devouring helpless villages and imprisoning princesses in towers? Plundering all the gold and treasure and stealing the love essence of each being for themselves?

OR... Do they feel they only act this way because their traditions prevent them from making their own choices? Doing what they truly want to do that makes them happy? The ability to express themselves, to perform a job they wouldn't normally do, or maybe... Finding love? I may not always know what's going to happen with each story, but all the years reading my favorite books gives me a 'rough' idea as to what to expect.

Ah. I understand, and daresay I've done the same. You are right, and I'll have to consider exploring that theme in my story. Thanks for your input.
