Self Care vs Self Comfort vs Distraction (Mental Health Advice) · 10:08pm Jan 17th, 2020
So, in my last therapy session my therapist and I talked about self care versus self comfort versus distraction. Self Care is something that fulfills you, whether or not it's easy. This can be things like working out, writing for me, stuff you love but isn't always easy. Self Comfort is what we think a lot more of where you go to get yourself a sweet treat, get a massage, get something that is a basic kindness for yourself but not personal fulfilment. Distraction is when comfort goes too far, like going from a glass of wine during dinner sometimes to half a bottle each day to get through which is not healthy, and a lot of my stuff has gotten into that realm due to how severe I need things to distract me from my own brain.
Shared this here because when I shared it in a Discord chat everyone really grabbed onto it so I thought I would share. Also doing some self care today despite the fact that my chest wants to collapse in on itself by going to the Theros prerelease event tonight.
I don't know what to say to that then... true...
The world can be a cruel place, often we only manage it because we have an outlet.
Some have one which they can utilize daily, like their work, others have a higher capacity to withstand the struggles of the world, but I can assure you, everyone is faced to cope with it.
Some more than others.
Quoting The Doctor, from Doctor Who:
I know it's a little out of context, but it still has some truth to it.

Those are very insightful, and it makes me think I may be doing the Distraction part a little too much.
But enough about me! What do you think of me?
Kidding! I hope you're well and keep the Distractions to a reasonable level.
5188161 Thank you! And part of what I'm working on in improving how I live my life is theoretically steps towards self care and away from my distractions. That's also why the transitionary period is likely to be rough to say the least.
Wow! First time I've heard a clear distinction between self-care and self-comfort; and not just "self-care" (the general idea) vs. a distraction. It makes sense!
Thanks for sharing dis
Huh... I think I'm going to share this on Discord one day, mainly to see if anyone's interested. I do agree on the wine example, don't drink too much of it. Heck, if someone wants to drink alcohol, then don't do it daily.
